Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on eating rice cakes? Are they good for ostomates or bad? Can they cause a blockage? What if you chew really well? I know they are kind of hard. I was just wondering if anyone else eats rice cakes? The little ones not the big ones. Like the flavored ones like that are the size of chips.

I eat the minis all the time as a snack. One little bag is enough and 100 calories or less. The caramel is awesome.

Why not try and see? Remember, we are all different, and how you and your stoma handle it will be different as well. As Nini can eat them, I can't eat them. Just try a little at a time; it's the only way you're going to find out if you can eat something or not.

I do make sure to chew well, and have extra water when I do eat them. And yes, as Beth so kindly reminded, we are all different. 😊

I eat them. Can't say if you can, just try one as we all do and see how it goes. It's the only way; you can't live in fear the rest of your life of eating something for no reason.

I know but I am scared to get another blockage. That is why I usually check here before I try anything. So I can see what experiences others have had with a food. What happens to you if you eat them?

I ordered the savory ones because they have less fat than the ones like apple, caramel, and chocolate.

Yeah I will try one and see how it goes and then go from there. I need a low fat snack option. That is why I was looking at rice cakes.

My only comment on rice cakes…..why did someone ever create them?  Like eating styrofoam. Just as gross as coffee. 🤮

Hi Lee,  I'm addicted to Crispy Minis, which are small rice chips, made by Quaker.  Do you have that brand in the States?  They are delicious, low in fat, and made with mostly brown rice.  I love the Sweet Chili flavour, but there are lots of others.  I always chew well anyway, but they really do break down easily and I can't imagine you would have any problems with them.  I usually eat a dozen or so at a time.

I used to feel the same as you about rice chips, until I tried Crispy Minis!

Yes, those are the ones I eat.  I am partial to the Carmel and the apple cinnamon ones. Kind of like dessert for me.

I completely understand that, and understand being afraid to eat things because of a blockage or other reasons. I have had a lot of weird things with my stoma and foods I have eaten. I try small amounts and then see how it goes, and then if it's good, I slowly increase. And I will spit out certain things in chunks that should be in chunks considering I chew, chew, chew, chew, and beyond chew. With these, my stoma didn't care too much for them, had a hard time getting it out, just like I found out my stoma has a very hard time with stuff made with potato flour to the point she won't function, but can have potatoes. But yours might be fine; the only way to find out is to try and see how your stoma does with it. We are all different. And no one can really answer the food question because you don't know how your own body will do until you try it. Like I can eat sweets all day and it doesn't thin me out, crackers, and muffins don't thicken me either, and the list goes on weird and odd.

Life's too short, put some real food in your belly.

Ain't no rice cake tasting like all-meat pizza, honey BBQ wings, cheesy garlic bread. Wash it down with a Coke, go into a food coma while watching Netflix with my girlfriend. It'll all figure its way out tomorrow. Don't be afraid to live. 👍 Yes, I know some do really need to watch what they eat, but some things are to be enjoyed.

If you chew well, it won't be harmful, I suppose. I myself avoid eating solid foods because only two months have just passed since I had an ostomy.

Hi, my name is Brad. I have a suggestion for a low-fat dessert using rice cakes. I am an ostomate, but of a different kind. I have a Urostomy (ileal conduit urinary diversion), so I don't have to worry about blockage, but if you find your body can handle them, I recommend using the larger, lightly salted ones and putting almond or peanut butter on them, along with your favorite yogurt topped with your favorite fruit. Just a suggestion…

A word that keeps popping up in this thread is starting to irritate the grammar police here, but the word is CARAMEL, not Carmel, however you pronounce it.

Caramel is the correct spelling if you're talking about food or colors. Carmel is a misspelling when used in those contexts, but it is a word that can be used as a name for people or places.

Here endeth the lesson, folks, and I will jump off my soapbox for now! 🤭

PS - Rice cakes are tasteless lumps of chaff with no nutritional value whatsoever 🤢 - there has to be a better alternative snack - something that actually resembles food, perhaps? 🤔

What you make them with, white or brown rice makes a difference.

Thanks for your input. Yes, these are Quaker. I am getting BBQ, Ranch, and Cheddar flavors to try them each out. I hope they are not a problem. I will try one or two first and see if it's a problem and then proceed from there. I do think that they would break down easily, but I am not sure as I haven't seen one yet. They are coming in the mail.

Thanks for your kind reply. I know my stoma is very weird too about what he likes and what he doesn't like. He hates most veggies and fruits but loves pasta. Go figure. He doesn't really like salad; it gives him the runs, and he hates carrots except in soups where they are so soft they mush right up. So I don't know how he will do with a mini rice cake. I guess you are right; I will have to try a little bit and see. And then if it goes okay, increase it and see how it goes. I wish there was a list somewhere of things that all ostomates can eat and can't, but I know there is a diverse spectrum and so there is no one set list.

I can't eat that stuff. I am on Rybelsus. And you can't eat too much fat when you are on it or you will vomit. I don't want to vomit because I don't want to get dehydrated again. Last time I vomited was because of a blockage and I got so dehydrated that my kidneys were at risk of failure. I had to be on IV fluids for 4 days and still had brown pee. It was terrible. So I don't want to anger the rybelsus gods.

Yeah, I have had mine much longer than you have had yours. So maybe it's different for me. I don't know. I won't know, I guess, until I try it.

That sounds good, except I can't eat fruit. But peanut butter or almond butter sounds good—not low in fat, but good. Yogurt is a main staple of my breakfast. I am always having yogurt.

Triscuit crackers are my go-to. Lots of different flavors. Put some cheese on and nuke it for a few seconds; serve it with salsa. We gave out rice cakes for Halloween, only had 10 kids; lots of leftovers I had to choke down.

You gave out rice cakes to kids for halloween? Did the kids seem thrilled?
