About two weeks after permanant ilesostomy surgery my stoma started prolapsing.  I wasn't warned anything about the possibility of this happening by my surgeon or anyone else as far as that goes.  It happens often when I have been up just walking around the house, but when I lay down it retracts after a while.  It prolapses up to about four inches, I always lay down when it gets that long, I don't know how long it would protrude if I didn't lay down.  Does  anyoneone have the same problem, and how long have you been dealing with it?  Thanks for your responce.  Have a blessed day in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I have a hernia and prolapse as you this happened about 2 months after surgery this was 21 months ago but I just put up with it

The only thing is when I change my pouch I have to lay flat so the stoma retracts

Several years after my colostomy my stoma prolapsed several inches and was painful.  Went to emergency room but they were clueless (and unwilling to admit that they knew nothing about stomas).  The pain subsided in two hours and the stoma returned to normal size.  Contacted my specialist and he said nothing to worry about, relatively normal except for the pain.  Hasn't occured since.

43 years ago I had sugery for UC and was given a standard ileostomy. Several months later, it started to prolapse, about 4-6 inches. Laying down would allow it to retract. They determined that the sutures that held it in place had come undone. The surgery had to be redone, but the next time, they made an internal pouch, which also fell apart! It took 5 surgeries until they realized that the problem was that I did not form the necessary scaring to hold things together. They used staples and mesh on my final surgery and it has stayed together for the most part. I have had some problems with the mesh. Good luck to you.
