Hi everyone,

My question is related to becoming a paramedic.
I recently tried to get into FRNSW as a retained firefighter and was unsuccessful due to my colostomy bag, despite spending full days on the fireground with the RFS. I have started my paramedicine degree, but I am now concerned I will have the same issue getting work as a paramedic.
Anyone here in emergency services?

Is it mandatory that you have to tell them?

I am a firefighter with CFA in Victoria. I had to go through a medical review and have my surgeon provide me with a letter of approval based on the AFAC Firefighter Classifications, and she signed me off for everything including BA, internal structure attack, etc. Perhaps have a discussion with your doctor/surgeon and also with Ambulance NSW about their requirements so you can preempt any negative feedback and have your medical paperwork ready.

I have had a colostomy since 2003. I've been a federal police officer since 2010 and successfully completed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy. No issues.

I'm a retired L.E.O. and current E.P. Sec Agent. My concern for you would be hernia issues from lifting multiple gurneys during a shift. Good support belts are available that should help. Good luck. You are needed.
