I have had an ileostomy for almost 30 years.  It all that time my body has changed and I have gained weight.  Now my stoma no longer protrudes beyond the surface of my belly making the weartime for my appliance short and problematic.  It seems to me that a surgical procedure to reform the stoma might be a good idea.  But I don't know if that is even possible or what other problems by be created.  Does anyone have experience with this kind of problem? and Has anyone ever had their stoma changed?

I would appreciate any comments.... thanks

Hi papajim,

Regarding your situation, it's not uncommon for stomas to change over time, especially with weight fluctuations. Many people have considered or undergone surgical revisions to address similar issues. It's definitely possible to have a stoma reformed, but it's important to consult with a specialist who can assess your specific needs and discuss potential risks and benefits. Some members have shared their experiences with stoma revisions, and it might be helpful to hear their stories and advice.

Congrats on being part of this community! You'll find lots of support, information, and some really cool people who understand what you're going through. Don't hesitate to reach out and share more of your journey.

I had my stoma for a few weeks and decided it wasn't far enough out as this led to faeces irritating the skin as they didn't drain into the bag properly. The surgeon took me back in and reformed my stoma and no problems at all since. So yes it is possible.

Hi papajim.  At one point my stoma was completely flat so I started using inserts with my flange to push it closer to the skin.  My stoma eventually changed by itself and was no longer flat although I had the discussion with a surgeon about revising it.  As Golfaddict says, it is possible.
