I have been wondering about irrigation. I have had my ostomy for a little over 4 yrs now.Is it too late for me to start irrigating now? I heard that people like me who have colostomies are good candidates but i never really thought about it untill now.I guess at the time i was a little skeeved at the thought of sticking anything in my stoma.I am just wondering if its too late to start now.

Hi Dee,

I don't irrigate but I have read that if you are a canidate, it's never too late. Until someone who irrigates post a clear answer for you, you could go to the Ostomy Association of America to find more information or just search the internet as there is much information. It would be best if you consult your doctor before you begin.

no, there is no reason you cant irrigate if you still have part of your descending colon and it is healthy. i would clear things with your dr first. there are several you tube videos that will instruct you. good luck and dont hesitate to contact me if i can be of any help.

Hello DeeH. I've been irrigating for years and can highly recommend it as it frees up the days to do things other than tend to a bag.  There should be no reason at all why you shouldn't be able to irrigate but as MMSH says it's best to check with your ostomy nurse or consultant first just in case there is something about you and you personal cirmsatances that may mitigate against it.   The sooner you get started the sooner you'l reap the rewards. I hope all goes well for you ! Best wishes Bill
