Having the right pouching system is essential to successful stoma care. This video provides step-by-step instructions on how to properly install a pouching system. You'll need a sizing guide, pen, scissors, water, and tissues or paper towels. If you are using a cut-to-fit skin barrier, draw the pattern of your stoma onto the backing of the skin barrier before cutting. When you are ready, remove the used pouch and clean the skin with water and a gentle soap. Then, center the opening of the pouch over the stoma and gently press the barrier to ensure good contact with your skin. Finally, place your hand over the barrier and hold it in place for 30 to 60 seconds. Keep an emergency kit with you in case you need to change your pouch away from home. With these steps, you can ensure that your pouching system will be applied correctly and securely.
