Changing your pouching system can seem like a daunting task, but with a few simple steps, it can be done quickly and easily. First, you need to prepare your supplies - a new pouch, skin barrier, and disposal bag, as well as any ostomy accessories you may need. Next, size and cut the skin barrier to fit your stoma and apply the pouch. When you’re ready, carefully peel off the used pouch while pushing the skin away from the skin barrier. Place the new skin barrier and pouch over the stoma and press the flanges together until you hear the clicks. Finally, press the pouch and barrier against the skin for about one minute to activate the adhesive. Keep an emergency kit of all the supplies you need to change your pouch with you if you are away from home.
Change the pouch regularly before it leaks, typically every 3 to 4 days for drainable pouches and more often for closed pouches. The best time to change the pouch is in the morning before eating or drinking. Steps to change the pouch include preparing the new system, cutting the skin barrier, removing the backing, removing the used pouch, cleaning and drying the skin, applying the new skin barrier, attaching the pouch to the skin barrier, and ensuring a secure fit.
