Hi friends,

I'm new to this forum.  Anyone has any idea if ostomy supplies expenses are deductible in Income tax?

Stay safe and healthy

Ravi

Since you're in Canada and I'm in the U.S., your rules will be different than ours.  Here, ostomy supplies would be legitimate medical expences and deductible, but you'd have to itemize your deductions, and your medical expences would have to exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.  You should touch base with a tax person in your country, or at least Google Canadian tax provisions re med expenses.

Presently I'm legally working in the usa and filing tax in USA. In Canada, AADL (Alberta Aid to Daily Living) covers a major portion and the rest is deductible in Income tax.

Thanks for the information.

The problem, of course, in the US is that when the standard deduction was raised a few years ago, very few people are able to itemize at all. Second, like was mentioned above, your medical expenses (out of pocket expenses NOT covered by insurance) have to exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income before you can claim even $1 on your itemized deductions. So, while the technical answer to your question is "yes", the effective answer to your question is "not really for most people". (My credentials: professional tax preparer for over 15 years.)

I am also Canadian, from Vancouver.  Ostomy supplies are considered medical expenses for income tax purposes so deduct away!  I stress that I'm not an accountant but I've had my ostomy since 2008 and have included my ostomy supply expenses every year.
