Dealing with Colic Pain After Ileostomy

So, it's almost been a year since I got my ileostomy, but I suffer from a lot of colic. The thing is, it's not regular wind pains; I get sharp pains and dull aches throughout my whole stomach and upper back, and it makes me feel physically nauseous. At first, I thought it was my body adjusting to the bag, but I've been getting it a lot recently. My diet hasn't changed apart from the fact that I'm on iron supplements and folic acid pills.

At first, I thought the stomach pains were from taking painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen, but I've stopped taking painkillers and can't seem to shift this uncomfortable, painful thing?! It's definitely not a blockage, but there's a chance it could be indigestion as it comes in waves.

Please, let me know if anyone gets the same problems!

Hi, I'm not a full member either. Is this how I leave messages? I get a bit confused with the site. xx

When I had that kind of pain in my stomach and upper back, it was due to intestinal strictures that caused blockages. So, you might want your doctor to do a scope to check things out. Good luck!

Fran, I was going to say something before you left. You told me before you were interested in continuing your education and becoming maybe a surgeon. Now, I don't know much about your situation or even the operation that you're having (apart from there being a few kinks). But what I do know is that you can get more grants and loans and things towards your education while you're young. You say you're managing okay now, yeah? It would be a shame if you went through with this surgery and something went wrong and it either affected your grades (like my health problems did with me) or you had to miss a year or two (like what happened with me when I first got ill) and you couldn't claim as much money and couldn't complete your education. I know you are very clever based on what you've told me about your grades and it would be a shame if you missed out on your opportunities to follow your dreams just for the sake of being able to wear a bikini.

I'm not trying to persuade you either way because it's your body and it's up to you, but if I were you, I would wait until you've finished your education before you do it. At least if you did that, you would have a better chance of following your dreams and also some of the problems with the J-pouch might have been worked out by then. Also, if you were a surgeon, you would know more about the procedure and be able to judge better what to do about it. Anyway, if you want to talk, I'm in the chatroom most days. JNK
