I’m always running out of paste. Can we make it? What is the best answer? I hate this!

Yes, that is duct tape and this is the pretty

version.

Hello junior

I have never used paste so I know nothing about it. You can use cheap micropore tape from the chemist which should be much easier to handle than the duct tape.

Or you could order more and then put a reminder on your calendar when to order.

What are you trying to do there? I can't see clearly from the photo, but that looks odd. Saran wrap taped over the stoma? Taped to some cotton? A cloth?

Are you just trying to hold the flange down?

They have C strip barrier extenders for that. No paste needed.

Hi Junior,

I assume if you use a lot.........the issue is cost.  Looks like all the name brand stuff runs around $6 an ounce, so if that's too expensive your only alternative is to buy the Chinese stuff on Alibaba and hope for the best.  There it runs about half the price of the good stuff, but if you try it and find you can't remove your barrier later............don't blame me..........I can't read Chinese!

  Here you go.........

I only use a 1 pc stoma bag & that's it. I warm it up with my hair dryer for a few seconds & it bonds very well. I have a colostomy, but if it were an ileostomy, that's a whole new ball game.

Hi Cool,

It really just depends on whether your skin is flat or irregular where you want your barrier to stick. The paste is just a liquid caulk to fill in surface imperfections and make it as flat as possible. My abs are flat, so I've never had to use it, so I can't comment on its effectiveness... but if Junior needs it... Junior needs it! 😉

My friend has used denture cream in his emergency bag in his truck.

I used to use the paste, but then I switch to brava rings… it works so much better,  a lot less messy and it has increased my wear time considerably.

Hi there, I have stopped using paste for some time now. I wear a 2-piece system. I know what you're going through, omg, been there, done that. So frustrated with it when I went through it! Now I'm doing super great as I educated myself with other products. Now I'm using barrier extenders under the flanges, then when placed, I use more extenders around the flanges. It soooo works, never have any more issues at all, no leaks and skin around the stoma has cleared right up! I have boxes of paste, like 30 boxes. If you want to buy them from me, I'm letting them go for 8 a box and have many extenders also, which are 20 a case. If you want to talk more, give me a shout. Hope things get better! Marie

Yikes! You are damaging your skin. Colostomy? Try Eakin rings & barrier strips. What brand of stoma gear are you using? If none, try Medvance Silicone Tape. It sticks great & won't leak or hurt you. It comes in 2 or 4 inch rolls.

I'm surprised you would suggest Eakin barrier rings. I just saw your reply to another topic on them. I believe you had issues with Eakin, as I do.

I never suggest using a product unkind to my skin. I would post the facts: I used them for 8 months. My skin got so bad the appliance could not stick. And it's not just me who feels Eakin is toxic.

There are better rings out there. Listen to the people suggesting them. Take note.

If the correct appliance, application, and behavior are used, you should be getting 3-7 days out of a wafer and thus only 1/2 tube of paste maximum for those 3-7 days.

If you're indigent, there should be some sort of public health assistance which allows you to receive a certain amount of ostomy supplies sent to you monthly, as well as an experienced ostomy nurse who will teach you.

Unfortunately, for your best comfort and individual body contour, you will have to become your own best educator, even contacting ostomy product suppliers for free samples you can try to see what works best for you.

I suggest taking a body contour/stoma type test online, then once you have an idea of what type of appliance you need (usually flat or convex wafers) and whether a one-piece drainable or two-piece drainable (user preference) is suitable, you can check out the ostomy product makers and request samples.

1/2 tube? 😳 I’ve never used paste but in every video I’ve ever watched on it, nobody has ever used that much or even close.

I have a belly fold with a near flush stoma and a granuloma that was being irritated by the convex belt.

So I had to adapt to using no belt, thus needed stronger paste adhesion and height to better insulate the granuloma from wafer irritation. Unfortunately, I'm using half a tube per bag at this time (two loops around stoma) to form a paste wall and extra large barrier strips all around.

I have a difficult situation and had to adapt, thus why I said "1/2 tube max" as I doubt most won't need anything more than that.

I now have silver nitrate sticks to treat the granuloma, but it's a once-a-week treatment and could take months until it's gone, if it can be eliminated.

Everyone has to adapt to their particular situation and body contour; videos online are likely geared for those without issues so as not to overcomplicate things for newbies.
