You can bend some wafers to make them flexible

In case many didn't know, like in the case of a belly fold, it's possible to weaken the wafer, even a convex, horizontally some so it fits better and allows one to bend over or sit some without the wafer detaching and causing a leak. A pencil or a pen can assist with bending it over.

A ring may not hold as well as paste, but usually those with belly folds need more filler anyway, just be mindful that the more paste used, the longer it takes to set up and harden.

I've found out that where I have to apply thicker than normal paste, onto the skin first to ensure a bond, is to stir it to mix some air into it. Or else after that when the wafer is applied and I stand up without sufficient wait time, the paste will ooze down or out causing a leak.

I now sleep only on my back, with pillows under each arm to keep me in place. Applying a fresh bag this way gives all night for the paste to set up and not let gravity inflict it's toll.

This is the terrible price one may have to pay with a stoma that doesn't quite stick out far enough and compounded by a belly fold.

I'm curious, were you a back sleeper before your ostomy? I'm in awe of folks who can train themselves to sleep on their backs. I've only ever been able to nap that way but curl up on my side to settle in for the night.

G-Day eefyjig,  I think sleeping on your back encourages the contents of the bag to pool around your Stoma which I believe to be a bad thing. Regards IGGIE

Agree with you on that.100%

Sometimes there is no choice and u must sleep on yur back.

The average ileo person should know abt this pooling and how to avoid it. And wants to avoid it.

i do start off  sleeping on my back but still do the toss and turn- and fetal positions..left and right. And guess what? A new thread came a out using a pregnancy pillow for sleep which would be the answer to stomach- sleeping- ileos.

The o.p. can't afford to do this. Or use it for now  bc he is working on a better seal adhesion.. I'm assuming it's a one night  one time "coffin type position " - for lack of a better image here...-for him..

. the next few days I don't see staying in that position unless he does bag

changes nightly... or the seal breaks next day...

It's no picnic for anyone trying to get a better seal due to scars..or belly folds.

I don't suffer from those conditions... but still seeing seepage or getting that smell totally aggravates me. Knifes out !!

Nothing...compared to what the o.p. goes through.

This guy is a Saint trying his best.

I'm just surprised no member can help him..suggest something to use.

Therefore..he's the first it seems.

I had been a side sleeper my entire life until I got cancer. My tumor got huge and started putting pressure on nearby organs. About 2 months before diagnosis, I found it too painful to sleep on my side because of pressure from the tumor (I  assume).

There were many nights of little sleep while I tried to adjust to sleeping on my back. I'd turn on my side in my sleep and it would wake me up. No fun.

I thought I'd be able to sleep on my side after surgery but for now, sleeping on my right side interferes with a drain that I still have. Sleeping on the left side is out, that would interfere with the urine from my urostomy draining into the night bag. So I am still sleeping on my back every night. But I cannot wait to sleep on my side again! Once a preferential side sleeper, always a preferential side sleeper!

Sleeping on ones back is easy with a pillow under each arm. Learned this trick in the hospital.

Also if ones upper body is elevated while sleeping, pooling around the stoma doesn't occur if one controls their diet (ileostomy here) with quantity and food selections.

For instance I usually stop eating anything major after 2-3 pm. Then only smaller snack size stuff after that. Also not things that are going to fill the bag and pool around the stoma. 😊

However sometimes I get a pancaking issue but I often feel for the lump starting and go flush it while on the toilet..Trying to push the pancaking can cause the wafer to detach. So I let water rinse it away inside the bag instead.

And my odor control is nearly flawless now, just one or two drops of antibacterial soap into the bag followed by water and two rinses, the second rinse I go lay down briefly to get it up around the stoma so it kills the bacteria and removes waste up there as well. Leaving soap residue seems to be enough to kill future odor. Not always though but a lot better than not.

When rinsing it's best not to squeeze the bag as that may dislodge the bond and cause a leak.

Things have been going really well lately for me since quitting coffee and the bad leak burns it was causing. Then in my desperation over doing everything in a vain attempt to reduce the pain. So I've undone all my crazy preparation and only use antibacterial soap around the stoma then just plain no sting paste. Works wonderfully.

I read an article which says a particular gut microbe responsible for digestion is super aggressive in the presence of coffee. So that might have been my problem.
