Hi Linda and all!

There are times when, because I exercise so much, the wings and bag support start coming off. Any devices and suggestions? I am pretty good at cuping a hand over the bag while I shower, but sometimes water gets in the bag, etc.

Thanks!

Try ostomy barrier strips...these will keep the water out and keep the bag glued to you  really well.

For the shower, I made a little shower curtain, like an apron. It keeps the direct spray off. I often wear flange extenders; if I see the edge start to lift, I put them on. I wear a wrap all the time. If it starts to leak, it is contained. It is called a tummy sleeve from a maternity shop.

Yep. By choice... although I do get enough exercise by "running" my mouth off... or as one person puts it, "babbling." πŸ€πŸ—£πŸ—£πŸ—£πŸ™‰

Thank you, I do use the barrier strips but still have an issue. Maybe I am not putting the strips on well enough; I will investigate.

You could enjoy the freedom of a naked shower - 'Tis one opportunity we bag-wearing ostomists truly have of being 'body-free'

PS I'm not being flippant - just saying - but I do appreciate that there is a cost involved in daily or twice daily changing one's bag - but if managed well, all is doable.

Good luck with your search for what suits you best...

A couple of times a week, I take off my bag and clean around my stoma with Head and Shoulders Classic Clean shampoo. If there is any redness, I apply Butt Paste diaper cream and top it off with Hollister Karaya 5 powder.

I use Hollister 54102 which has a plaster surround and really sticks to your skin. I exercise and shower daily and have never had any problems, no leakages or any tendency to pull away, in fact no problems at all.

I use a wrap when exercising. I don't have a problem with showering with my bag exposed to water. If you plan a bag change after you shower, like you time it so that you are due for a bag change when you shower, then it shouldn't be a problem. If you get into a situation where it is a problem, use extender strips. I can't because my skin reacts to them, but you may be able to use them.

Yes, Jayne, I have done that and all is good. I clean, get everything ready, and my wife puts the bag on for me. I am a bull in a china shop with poor eyesight, so I try not to inconvenience her.

Hi Infinity! Are those the barrier strips that I use now? If it is something different, I will certainly try them. Thanks!

What kind of wrap do you use when exercising? I’ve just started walking outside after recovering from my emergency surgery & chemo, and while my Convatec bag is really working well (that was a LONG search, to get the right bag, cause I have an innie), it does seem to irritate my skin when I exercise. Probably because my belly is too big and too loose, but that’s what the walking is supposed to work on! I wonder if I used a belt to hold my bag more firmly against my belly if that might help?

An ostomy/hernia belt is one of the best things you can do for yourself as an ostomate β€” I wear a belt 24-7 (only take it off to shower). Also you don't need a hernia to wear a hernia belt. A belt increases comfort and wear time. I don't like the 1" belts sold by ConvaTec/Coloplast/Hollister, I use a 2" belt from Nu-Hope.

Hmm, 23.5/7, you mean? Ha ha. 30 mins minimum in the shower.

Why remove the belt? You get to clean it while it's on.

I keep mine on 24/7. The minute I might remove it, that bulge begins moving forward.

Weird. Strange... a little OCD about it myself. πŸ˜‰

I will look those up. I don't have any issues with showering as my device stays glued on, and I put on a cover for the filter so it doesn't get wet, but exercise is becoming an issue. Of course, the irritation I felt yesterday is gone today, so perhaps it was something working its way out, who knows. I have a very small ostomy, and it is sunk into my belly, so I have slightly different challenges. Thanks!
