Good morning. I think I might have a stomach hernia. I would like to start wearing a belt. I am 6 months post-ileostomy. The medical team failed to tell me the risks of hernias. Recommendations for a belt would be appreciated.

My surgical team failed to warn me about hernias too. That seems to be a common omission. Thanks to the people here for teaching me that.

Nu Hope is frequently recommended, and I am waiting on my custom belt from them (I have 2 stomas, so an off-the-shelf belt won't work).

I am using a belt from the following company, which I like but needed to pay for out of pocket. The Nu Hope belt is being covered by insurance.

Stealth belts are frequently mentioned as good. I was unable to get the 2-hole belt I needed from them, so no personal experience.

Nu-Hope makes very good ostomy/hernia support belts; I wear one 24/7.

Good morning from New Zealand,

Yep, nobody told me about hernias when I got my ileostomy 28 years ago either.

You said it was an abdominal hernia? Is it above your stoma or under your stoma? Hernias under your stoma are called a parastomal hernia, a visible bulge in the abdominal wall near the stoma. I have had both, and I had to have surgery for both.
My abdominal hernia, which was caused by my abdominal wall being weakened from at least (if not more) 33 open bowel surgeries, and I had to have a big piece of mesh put in to strengthen my abdominal wall.
I have had 5 parastomal hernias even though I was very careful, which is why I now have so many scars on my abdomen, which sometimes makes it tough injecting my insulin every day, as injecting into a scar is very painful.

I found that I could get very affordable hernia support belts on this site:

For my parastomal hernia (which is very small), I got this hernia support belt:

For my incisional hernia, I got a belt similar to this:

Except I wore it above my stoma. It was not comfortable, and it was warm, but it did the job until I got my hernia operation.
