I just had my ileostomy surgery, and I have never felt so overwhelmed like this in a long time. Talking to someone who has some tips, knowledge, and supportive advice would be a literal lifesaver.

Just to let this community know that I can get along with pretty much anyone.

May blessings come your way to all of you.πŸ™πŸΌπŸ«‚β€οΈπŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ˜‡

If you just had the surgery, let yourself heal before getting overwhelmed. Your ostomy will change sizes as it heals. Changing equipment, emptying, what to wear, etc. will all come in time, and you'll adapt and learn what works best for you, as each of us is different. One day at a time, and soon you'll be back to your new you.

I remember feeling very overwhelmed at first, but I had been in so much pain from ulcerative colitis that freedom from pain helped me accept my stoma. Then I had j-pouch surgery and was uncomfortable, like I had active UC, so I chose a permanent ostomy. I guess what I'm trying to say is that many factors affect how we deal with having a bag. Keep an eye out for leaking. If that happens, try a bag with a convex hole. Using a sticky barrier ring around your stoma and then placing the hole of the bag over that really helps prevent leaking. Someone on here (or many!) will answer and support you.

I replied to your other topic, but being relatively new (7 months) with both a colostomy and a urostomy, I remember being overwhelmed. It takes some time to adjust to your new normal. It gets easier, I promise.

Are you having specific problems that we can help with?

Hi Jimmy and welcome. Feeling overwhelmed in the beginning is perfectly normal. I think most of us have been there. There is a learning curve, and there will be mishaps along the way, but you will get there. Any specific questions, just ask, and venting is also allowed!

Welcome. Education is key on this new journey of yours. I suggest you check out UOAA, the United Ostomy Association of America. It's our national organization. Also, Ostomy101.com. You will learn about foods, blockages, skin care, clothing, ostomy products, travel, activities, exercise, and a whole host of other tricks of the trade. You might also want to check out a local support group near you. Just remember you are not alone on this new journey of yours. Wearing a pouch does not define whom you are. There are solutions. We're here for you. Best of luck.

Hi and welcome! Like Susan, I myself have two, and it was very overwhelming when I woke up. I wasn't expecting two; I knew I was having a stoma, but the shock of looking after two messed my head up. However, I soon got into a routine of my bag changes, and mine are called Reggie and Ronnie after the Krays. Don't be too hard on yourself and take it slow. My advice is to be happy and positive; that really helps. Good luck, but we are all here if you need us. πŸ˜€

Hi Jim, welcome to the site. It is overwhelming, but if you were sick like I was from colitis/Crohn's, it's a relief knowing you might not have to take meds for relief or doctor appointments to go to. Once you get the right appliance to work for you, life will get back to normal.
