Safe Laxatives for Colostomy Patients

Hi has anyone any ideas on a safe laxitive to use ? i have a colostomy and i have always used Milk of Magnesia or Milpar but it seems there are problems with the supliers and i cant get either . any ideas please ?

I also have a colostomy and use a stool softener (Colace) to counter blockages.

Better to use a stool softener than an actual laxative.  Also I find the tropical fruits (except pineapple) are very helpful in elimination because they have soluable fiber and don't cause cramping.  Ditto oranges, if sliced into thin slices, and then halved.  That breaks up the membranes enough to pass easily.



You could also try something like black cherry juice - that was something the pediatrician had my son take regularly when he was small and experiencing "busy boy disease" (not emptying his rectum when he should have and it all compacted).

Only had my colon removed 2 years ago but found the best laxitive for me is the common pitted prune. Loved them as a kid but could not eat as they were very effective. Now I can eat them for the flavor and effect. Good Luck
