Hi,
I have to go to a baby naming in a week and a half, and I am very nervous about what to wear. These are all family, but they all live out of state, and I haven't seen any of them since before the surgery in May. My bag tends to have everything go to the bottom then get really fat, and I don't want it to be too noticeable. I have worn things that I thought would be fine, and it's looked like I have had an erect penis, and I am a girl. I found a dress that would work, but I wear the bag horizontally. Does anyone have experience with that? Girls and women, for nice dresses not fancy, what styles work best? Any stores you have better luck with?

Thanks so much,
Elena

Hi, I saw your question and hope that I can give some insight. I have had an Ileostomy for over 4 years now and have gone through all you might think when it comes to wearing "clothes"! First of all, whenever I feel/see that my bag is getting "full" or is "ballooning", I immediately hit the ladies room to empty it. If you're afraid of it "smelling" during this process, then there are tons of deodorizing liquids out there to put into the bag before applying it. These do work - and others have also mentioned using Tums, etc. which also works like a deodorant. If you are wearing a drainable appliance, then all of this should work. If you're wearing a closed pouch, then it will have to get replaced before you see the "balloon" ready to blow. It's easy as that. When it comes to clothes, I wear normal clothes that everyone else does! What I have done, though, is to purchase very feminine panties made specifically for ostomates where they have a pocket to cradle your pouch and keep it closer to your body and give you support at the same time. They basically "hide your pouch" where you can't see the bag on the inside nor outside...so, I suggest you look into some of these! My medical insurance pays for them, too, because they're quite expensive but are considered necessary for us because of our different medical situations. You can check your supplier to see if they carry "Options Ladies Undergarments". Another good pantie is through ostomysecrets.com.

They have a variety of pretty panties that will do the same as the Options, but I prefer the Ostomy Secrets panties even more because they are not as heavy as the Options...but you need to check out both to see if any of these will help with the ballooning. Nothing will help with the contents...they will need to get emptied more often in order for your profile to look normal. Also, wearing the bag horizontally is great, too! You can secure the opposite side with ostomy tape and away you go! I do this when wearing swimsuits so that my tummy appears flatter without the bag being outlined! These are just suggestions and I hope you have a great time out with friends/family!!
