Foods and Their Effects on Digestion and Stool

There are always so many questions here about what foods to eat, what to do about gas, etc that I copied a short list put out by my local ostomy support group:



Foods that thicken stool xmlo/o

 Bananas, rice, bread, potatoes, creamy peanut butter, applesauce, yogurt, pasta, pretzels, and marshmallows. o/o

Foods that loosen stool o/o

 Dried or string beans, chocolate, raw fruits, spiced foods, fried or greasy foods, leafy vegetables, alcoholic drinks, and prunes. o/o

o /o

Foods that color stool o/o

 Beets and red Jell-O. and strawberries.o/o

o /o

Foods that cause odor o/o

 Fish, eggs, asparagus, garlic, some spices, beans, turnips, and foods in the cabbage family (cabbage, onion, broccoli and cauliflower) and alcohol. o/o

o /o

Foods that cause gas o/o

 Dried or string beans, beer, carbonated beverages, cucumber, foods in the cabbage family, spinach, corn, and radishes and highly spiced foods. o/o

o /o

Foods that may resolve gas o/o

 Cranberry juice, buttermilk and yogurt.
