Does anyone have the problem of faeces hanging around their stoma and sticking for so long that it melts the flange?...I have been advised to put a little baby oil in the bag to help it slide down... it hasn't worked - any suggestions?

Walkalot,

Does this happen even when you are walking or standing or does it occur when you are laying down. My guess is that the hole in your wafer might be too small or large which is causing the stoma, when it moves, to deposit the fecal material under the wafer. This is the first thing to check. The type of food you eat will also affect the deposition of the feces under the wafer. For example, heavy roughage that is not totally digested will cause the stoma to excessively dilate to the extent that it will weaken the flange accelerating the deposition.

Thanks for replying..... it happens whenever & wherever in fact everyday to be honest! Doesn't alway irritate, so can't tell until the bag is removed.

Hi Walkalot

I usually pour a cup of warm water into my ileostomy bag if my output is thicker, then swoosh it around and empty it. That makes everything nice and clean. Give it a try.

After you rinse your bag, be sure to leave just a little air in it (don't press it flat) so the poop can drop to the bottom.  I had the same problem till some genius on this site gave me this hint.  It works perfectly.  Of course, if you have diarrhea, some of the liquid will naturally work its way beneath the flange if the fit is not perfect around your stoma, but if your poop is normal and has some consistency, the air allows it to go to the bottom of the bag.  Hope this works for you.
