Hi Dave Urostome same as you .I dont do anything special about drinking--Ido the same as before Op. Coffee in the morning--couple of cups of tea through the day--Odd glass of wine or beer through the week. I dont drink any extra water , in fact I seldom drink water, Oh I do like a glass of Tesco's Firery Ginger beer now & then . After I came out of Hosp two & a half years ago, no one mentioned drinking more.

I dont have any kidney probs , maybe you do?? But I'm not going to drink gallons of water just for the sake of it!!.....I Empty my bag every 2-3 hours & its maybe a third to nearly half full, depends on fluid intake or how near I am to a toilet....Pete.

Same goes for me. I have a Urostomy AND an ileostomy.
I drink coffee in the morning, a few cups of tea during the day, i drink cola, and orange juice.
But i don't drink a gallon of water a day, that's for sure.
Your brain will tell you when you are thirsty, and then drink.
It all depends on the situation, if it's winter time, and your inside all day doing nothing,
then you don't need to drink water all day, however, if your outside, working in the sun,
and sweating, then you need to drink.
Most times i get up at least once or twice a night to empty my bags, and when i do, find myself really thirsty, and down a big glass of fruit juice.

Hi David,

I drink according to thirst first. I drink mainly green tea, cranberry juice, water and the occasionally wine or coffee. The only times when I drink heaps of water are when I exercise and before bed, when I connect the night bag.

I have found that if I drink a glass of wine, I need to counter it with two glasses of water, as I get thirsty and feel dehydrated.

If I drink 4 litres of water a day, I would be always going to the toilet too. As it is, with what I drink, I go every 11/2 to 2 hours. I've read drink 2 litres of water, but we are all different.

Cheers Julie

I drink it when I'm thirsty. It also depends on what I'm doing. If I do sports drink more.

However drinking plenty of water is always good. We must drink a lot to reduce the risk of infection.

What do you think about cranberry juice? I discovered that When I drink cranberry juice, the urine does not smell.

P.S.

Sorry for my english!

Hi,

I drink normal like before the surgery (had urostomy for 11 years)  I have extreme frequency though.  If I drink anything, I have to run every couple of mins.  It's been like this for since before surgery and worse after.  What I do is drink most of my fluids at night before bed and then hook up to a night drainage bag.  I don't have to get up during the night then.  I will have a cup of coffee in the morning but then I need to be near a washroom.  I will have sips of water through out the day to combat thirst and dehydration.  I plan on getting to a specialist as soon as I can to discuss this issue further.

H everyone, have recently undergone urostomy due to bladder cancer(4 weeks ago)am trying to get my head around drinking of fluids and when to empty bag,i realise it is still early for me yet,but wheras before could drink as much as i wanted with no worry ,i understand now that i have to plan and limit what i drink and understand how my body works, have been told must drink between 2 to 3 litres of fluid a day which i am finding a bit intimidating because that will i have to plan my life around the location of toilets, can anyone give me any tips on this and also the drinking of alcahol,i realise my days of pub crawls are gone, but i would like to think i could still have a beer or glass of wine occasionally, many thanks   chippy1
