Why Does Water Affect My Ileostomy Differently Than Tea?

I know this may sound weird but...is water heavier then ice tea? For some reason, I can drink all the tea & soda I want but when I drink even a little bit of water, it comes out IMMEDIATELY and with force, usually causing a leak.

I don't drink alot. I have a cup of hot tea in the morning, then a glass of iced tea with lunch, then 2 glasses of ice tea with dinner, then maybe a glass of gingerale a few hrs after dinner.

I will take a sip of water with my meds but that's it. I would LOVE to be able to down a bottle of water.

I am urinary incontinent. My urine is a dark gold color, probably because I don't drink enough.

Is there a secret to drinking water?

Maybe try either a pinch of salt or a litle bit of lemon juice in it. these tend to make the body absorb the water quicker, kinda like electrolyte drinks do,, that may help. otherwise iced tea no sugar is ok. Sugar bad especially the refined white crap.

With an Ileo you should drink at least 2-3 litres of fluid a day. You can easily dehydrate badly and it could also cause a blockage that is very painful. Soda drinks will mainly give the bowel gas and is full of sugar.

If you need to confirm what I have said, try doing it and you will see what I mean. Or, see you stoma nurse and she will confirm it.

I dehydrated very badly last year and was hospitalised for a few days till the blockage cleared. They also didn't realise I already drank 3-4 litres of water a day.

I reallt don't have dehydration issues because I hook up to tpn for 12 hrs. a day.  Without it, I think I'd be dead!

Have you had a lot of your small bowel removed??

I have a different ostomy to you so this might not work for you, Mine is a jejunostomy. I have had a lot of my small bowel removed water goes straight through me, the only things I can drink without coming straight through are milk and dioralyte.

I have had my whole large bowel removed.  I don't have an issue with dehydration, but I know I should be drinking lots of water.  Drinking water should not be a problem for anyone, I would assume. The more the better.  You just seem to empty it more, thats all.

When you have a a lot of your small bowel removed it's different, yes we still need to drink more fluids between 3 & 4 litres a day but water is like taking  bowel prep. When you say empty more often it can be 20 or more times a day, our bags can need emptying by the time we have done the velcro straps up.
Also known as short bowel syndrome.
I was on TPN for 2 months I still had to drink a lot, I think you should ask your Dr if you need to drink more.

TPN stands for "TotalParenteral Nutrition".  I have a picc line in my arm & I hook up to it iv every night for 12 hrs.  It has all my fats, calories, vitamins & minerals.  Because of my short bowel, my body doesn't absorb the nutrients from the food I eat so I have to get my nutrition IV. Here's a link that explains. http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec01/ch003/ch003c.html
