I was having pains in my stoma area for that pass 2-3 days.  This morning, i had a hard time to stand up as the pain was terrible.  So i sent my daughter off to school and went to the ER.  They took me right away. They did ultrasound of my stomach area.  Kidneys, liver, spleen, gallbladder all seems to be fine. Iv fluids, pain meds that didnt work and a ct scan.  They came to me with the results stating that I have inflammation around my stoma area.  I asked what is that caused from.  They said it could be from gaining weight, lifting/pulling and/or my bag gets full and hangs and I dont empty enough.  For pain take only tyelenol.  Have any of you ever heard of this and has it ever happned to you?

hey family12,

welcome to the club, sorry about the problems. the only time i had any probs with the actual stoma was when i cut the opening on the plate too big. thus not a good seal and inflamation of the whole area. i am now to the point where i cut the opening a little small on purpose and apply a generous bead of paste around the opening. also to take the weight of the bag off the plate i tape the top of the bag to my skin.  no one likes a saggy bag

Hi Family12,  Welcome to our group.  Sorry that you have been experiencing issues with swelling.  I was told after my surgery not to do any heavy lifting as this could cause hernia issues and swelling.  I purchased underwear that have a pouch in the front to support the bag and this has really helped.  Plus you can wear a belt to help support the bag also.  I also empty frequently to take the load off.  Garfish's idea with the tape is a good one too.  Good luck and keep your chin up it will get better.  Penguins7

That sounds very sketchy to me and I would seek a second opinion quickly.  WTH is that supposed to mean, inflammation around your stoma?  In the skin itself?  That makes no sense at all.  Could be you are developing a condition called pyoderma gangrosum (sp may not be right) which sometimes happens to folks with inflammatory bowel disease who also have stomas.  It causes inflammation and ulceration around the stoma itself.  It is serious and can compromise you quickly.  I just think the explanation sounds stupid and implausible and I would investigate further.  Hopefully I'm just being paranoid

I checked what Ms Megan referred to (Pyoderma gangrenosum) and hopefully she is totally wrong. Sorry Ms Megan. That is scary stuff, comparable to the flesh eating disease.

It might just be that your skin got inflamed because of contact with your output.

When that happens I sit on the side of the bathtub and read and let the air dry out the area around the stoma. Trying to use stoma adhesive powder may help, but until the inflammation of the area stops and with me waiting till it is completely dry (sometimes the skin stays moist from the inflammation) the problem remains. But nothing like the kind of pain you are referring to.

And again a note about Canadian Healthcare, you have to be on top otherwise you will be lost in the noise. Being at times obnoxious, certainly aggressive the healthcare I receive is excellent but the other day I had to go back and forth between my oncologist and surgeon to make sure he received all the pertinent information from the oncologist. If I had not pursued this I'd still be waiting for some answers.

You're welcome to ask questions directly (btw to start any conversation either use general chatroom or send a wink)

Cheers,

Ed
