I am having considerable discomfort  with my hernia although I seem to have read somewhere that they seldom hurt mine does - do any other members suffer this?  Also how big is "big" with regard to this kind of hernia, I have to lie back on the bed for a while before I can change the bag (which makes going out for a day difficult) - anyone found an answer for this? I mention member lottagelady because I seem to remember her surgeon told her that her hernia was about "as big as it gets"

Hi Prawle, mine HURTS too! I am in huge pain without my 'corset' on which helps to support my back also and can barely stand without it. It looks as though I am 8 months pregnant on the side where my stoma is when I take the corset off,  and the 'pull' on my back, shoulders and my bowel is incredibly painful.  I can feel loops of bowel at the side of it with my hands.  At the moment it is bad when I eat, seem to be getting lots of wind which too is painful and needs to be resolved with surgery - I have a malfunctioning loop ileostomy which means I go to loo as well as passing waste through my bag - when this occurs, which it is doing more frequently, I get a lot of pain also in my abdomen. It sounds as though you need some support for your hernia - you can get this through your stoma nurse /GP, though nothing on the market was sufficient to control mine, so I have it 'built' specially for me at the orthotics dept of my hospital. Ann Summers - look out! Hope that helps a bit, sounds like you too need a repair ........ Rachel x

Thanks lottagelady - my stoma nurse prescibed me a support belt but the hernia seems to push it outwards and also causes the bag not to work correctly due to the pressure on it. Can you manage to change a bag without lying back for while and letting the hernia subside?

Hi, I have always stood to change mine with a mirrror, and mine never subsides, is just sort of 'held together' by my corset. I don't think I would be able to change it lying down, I just grin and bear the pain before I get the corset back on again. My corset has a hole in it for the bag to go through which is reinforced around the edge with a rigid plastic. Have a look at this link below - the stoma won't work if there is pressure on it, or will cause multiple leaks, what on earth are they thinking of????

The ones shown on there are similar to mine, but mine is a bit more substantial! What possesses these companies to make these things in white? Is it me....? There's a market out there for brown or black support wear if anyone is interested!

Hya,, My hernia is uncomfy but not painful It is about 4 inches high,, around 8 inches in diametre  and has numerous little hernias within it. So in fact I can't seem to find where the big one starts and little ones finish. Kinda disheatening when I have been working out at the gym and losing weight and my belly still loks like I have had a weeks beer binge and me gut has decided to bloat itdself. Ah well just try to wear a support and if that gives no relief then maybe a hernia repair is on the cards soon,, Good luck

Hi

MD here. With regards to your question i have had surgery three times to repair my stoma hernia, the reason for three operations were the first two failed. I went to another hospital for second opinion and specialist suggested he done a procedure using pig skin to repair the hernia. This was a success and seems to have held out for the last three years(fingers crossed)

Your question about getting pain from your stoma i have been suffering pain there for last two year. I'm such a stubborn person and just get on with things thinking they will just sort thereselves out but the pain got so unbearable that i had to act on it, after seeing specialist he put it down to skin underneath stoma being distressed? What it looks like is two little white area's beneath the stoma which are unbearable to touch, which you can amagine the problems and pain while changing pouch! He left it to me to decide what to do after the stoma nurse suggested using these circular efforts called extra seal as he wanted to perform surgery to remove the distressed skin. After trying these extra seal efforts it seemed to do the trick and still using them to date, I still get some bad days though but not as many as i did so am in process of arranging the surgery to get rid of this problem

Hope this helps and if i can help in any way please do get in touch

Regards
