Is it possible for an ileostomy for 33 years to cause a vitamine D defecincy? Am having foot, bone ,muscle, skin problems. Also could years of cortisone use contribute to this? Finally a Dermatologist has found Maybe a reason? Vitamin D level is -5?? Waiting on call from Dermatologist to explain?

Thanks

Hi Soozq,

There are quite a few drugs that can block the metabolism of Vitimin D, cortisone being one of the biggies lol,  cortisone-like drugs deplete the body of vitimin D and also interfere with calcium absorbtion, long term use can result in bone loss. Cortisone may also lead to the depletion of vitimins B12, B6, folic acid and pottasium, which may account for your muscle and skin problems.

There are a few other drugs that you may be unaware of that block or deplete the body of Vitimin D. Cholesteral medicines such as cholybar, colestid and questran interfere with the absobtion of vitimin D, some epilepsy drugs and barbituates interfere with Vit' D also, and as a result calcium absorbtion is hindered too.

Most hormone replacement drugs, laxitives and a certain sleeping tablet Doriden will also affect the metabolism of Vit' D.

There are actually many different reasons why you may be deficient in Vit'D, some time ago i came across quite a good website called The Vitimin D Learning Centre, http://www.allergymatters.co.uk/acatalog/Vitamin_D_Learning_Centre.html   it's well worth a wee read.x

Long term cortisone use can definitely be the cause of low vitamin D...as I found out at the ripe old age of 40 diagnosed with osteoporosis and very low vitamin D (and the Crohn's disease that required the long term cortisone wasn't helping any).  It can be reversed (slowly) with calcium+vitD supplements such as caltrate...which helped me, that and as much sunshine as I could tolerate.  I honestly believe the ileo helped me overcome this better because I no longer require drugs of any description because of it (the occasional vitamins) and feel healthier than I ever have...so I really hope the ileo is not the cause!

I hope you find an answer.
