That's a standard drain put in post-surgery. To prevent blood and fluids from building up under the skin as much as possible. Will be easily removed prior to discharge.

It wasn't removed prior but a week after and not for abscess but for the surgery. If left too long it could cause an infection. Too early a build up of fluids.
