Using BD PureWick System for Urostomy Night Drainage

I am a 12+ year urostomy ostomate. Urostomates have to hook up to a night drainage bag or bottle in order to stay dry while sleeping. Gravity flow into the drainage bags or bottles keeps your pouch empty. About a month ago, I purchased a BD PureWick system off eBay. This system consists of a small suction pump and a wick with tubing designed for ladies experiencing incontinence. I purchased a unit without the wick; added about 10 feet of additional vinyl tubing and hooked it up to my pouch. The suction amount is small and pulsating, but it continuously empties the pouch, which means if I roll over on the pouch during the night, the pouch will not leak or get me wet. The suction unit, if purchased new from Liberator Medical, the exclusive retailer, costs $400. I got mine on eBay for under $300. Suction works much better than gravity flow! Just wanted to share my experience. I don't see many or any urostomates on this site.

Adapt, improvise, and overcome… well done.

Hi Tex.........that's awesome! There's a bunch of urostomates, but they don't always mention it. So you're among folks who know what you're dealing with! Thanks for sharing the info; hopefully, others can make good use of it.

That's brilliant MacGyvering! Gravity really isn't at all reliable to keep the siphon going. Thank you for sharing your brilliance. Maybe you could fine-tune and patent an entirely new night drainage system.
