Does anyone in the US know if having an ostomy can entitle you to certain ADA benefits?

The ADA will protect you from workplace harassment and allows you to access "reasonable accommodations."

For example, if you need additional time added to a break to empty your pouch, that's something your medical provider can tell your employer (in writing) that you need due to a medical condition. Another example of a reasonable accommodation would be an adjustable desk, so that you could stand up to do your work. The cost of an adjustable desk is not unreasonable. Again, it would need to be in writing from your medical provider.

Some accommodations may be considered unreasonable, like converting a bathroom to be ostomy-friendly. That cost may be thousands of dollars and not practical as the only person who would use that bathroom is a person with an ostomy.

If you need additional time for appointments and you've already used your sick time, then you can ask to use unpaid time off to go to the appointment.

The two most important things to remember about the accommodations are that they must come from a medical provider and they must be in writing.

Thank you for the input. I was not even sure if an ostomy was a qualifier. Much appreciated!

The one thing that I dislike about this process is that people who need accommodations are forced to disclose the reason that they need to be accommodated.

By disclosing our condition, we may face bias or raging ignorance. Then there's the fear of people running their mouths and spreading rumors, asking prying and embarrassing questions.

But... it's what we've got to work with. Check in with human resources for your company's process and any needed forms.

Ostomies don't qualify as a disability.
