Why Does Caffeine Affect Ostomies?

What exactly makes caffeine affect a stoma? I only had a minimal amount of caffeine in this drink called Bai. It is a fruit drink, but there is a little caffeine in it, and I think it gave Marvin ADHD or something. He turned all liquid and it came out rapidly. Like, I emptied the bag and 5 minutes later it needed to be emptied again. It really was not that much caffeine. But why does caffeine affect ostomies?

Hi Lee, are you sure it's the caffeine? What type of stoma do you have? I have an ileostomy and do not have that problem. Maybe it's just you; we are all different and some of us react differently to different things. I will be interested to see what others have to say and have experienced. Elwick

I have an ileostomy. I have heard others say caffeine speeds digestion. That is all I know about it. I mostly avoid caffeine because I have insomnia, but I do like Bai, and if I have it before 10 AM, my doctor is okay with that.

Caffeine is a diuretic, it causes many people (even without a stoma) to have loose bowels. It can cause dehydration if not careful.
I drink a lot of coffee, more than I should, but I take imodium and eat fiber to help thicken my output and balance things out.

I know we're all different and having said that, although I drink several cups of coffee each day (and the occasional high-caffeine energy drink), it doesn't affect my output. Fruit juice on the other hand, now that's a completely different story!
