Leakage Issues with Ostomy Tape Barrier After Swimming

I am fairly new to having my ostomy (done Oct 2010), and didn't have very many issues with leakage in the beginning.  As my stoma has gotten smaller I have started having issues.  I have found that my stoma tends to go further under the barrier at night and when I lay down, often causing some leakage at night.  I have switched to a convex Convatec moldable barrier, and this has seemed to help with leakage around the stoma area, however, I have now started having issues with leakage and keeping the tape collar to stick.  I live in Florida, and with a 3 year old daughter who loves to swim I go swimming at least once a week, and find that my appliance tends to leak and start to come un-stuck after swimming.  Any advice or products to help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Tammy.

Have you tried barriers without tape?  They're the same size as the barriers with tape, it's just the whole thing is made of the same material (the stuff around the center).  Can someone please explain that better?  I used to think that the ones without tape were smaller and from what I've read online, it seems I'm not the only one.

Genairex makes the BEST ostomy accessory I've found, next to barrier rings.  They're called "Securi-T Hydrocolloid Skin Barrier Strips", product # 200344.  They're curved strips that feel like the same material as some thinner barrier rings I've tried, about 2-3 inches long and sticky on one side.  I don't use them 100% of the time, but most of the time I use 3 or 4, depending on the size of the barrier I'm using, and basically add an extra layer of protection all the way around.  When I'm not feeling quite as paranoid, I'll only use one if I find new trouble spots.  The description says you can put them on before or after the appliance.  Call Genairex for samples.

Good luck.
