Flushing Kidneys Post-Surgery as an Ileostomist: Seeking Advice

Some thoughts please:

Kidney flushing... hydrating but not good just drinking as losing electrolytes as an ileostomist?

Procedure: MON 16 OP = Flexible Ureterorenoscopy and laser lithotripsy for stag horn surprisingly low Hounsfield density [presumed] struvite calculi

It has taken 5 days to clear the urine throughput from dark pink and lots of gunge to almost clear, free of gunge and bits.

And drinking clear fluids [+ some juices] in the order of 2.5 liters min daily + tea and soups etc., and light mixed diet.

The intervention appears to have gone well, apart from the loss of the stent, which came out by itself within 24 hours of it being placed—working out a good 6 inches of its 12 or so inch length within 3 hours of its placement.

Tomorrow - 7 days post-op - one is having an ultrasound scan in X-ray and clinical assessment by the operating surgeon - 7 days to the hour.

I HAVE ONE VERY CONCERNING SYMPTOM which is scaring me - it's like the days leading up to my ostomy surgery some 45 years ago AND IT IS NIGHTLY SWEATS WHICH HAVE COMMENCED ON THE FRIDAY [- day 4 post-op] and have continued on a nightly basis..... no temp or fever just a soaking wet pillow - awakening under the duvet wet but cold - just the upper torso and face neck....... perspiration in droplets and WET THROUGH!

Generally - although I know it's early days at present - but the fatigue is also surprising...... for I began to feel better by post-op day 5 after an understandable goodish place for 2/3 with the worst day being 4 when pain was high.

Now pain minimum and manageable without analgesics.

I can only assume I have tipped my electrolytes in some way?

Any thoughts from you medics on site...... OBVIOUSLY, I WILL BE SPEAKING TO MY KIDNEY UROLOGY SURGEON TOMORROW..... BUT HE IS NOT AU FAIT WITH THE BALANCES WE OSTOMISTS MAINTAIN.

I am finding these cold sweats on a nightly basis a surprising happening - particularly scary and appreciate some early pertinent thoughts please.

No ABS or NSAIDs being taken currently - just tramadol as a PRN pain management - but hardly at all now.

The actual procedure went as expected - good fragmentation small [<10mm] residual bit in lower pole not accessible with laser on first intervention...

Planned for stent to be removed after 14 days then CT KUB to assess clear and residual fragments..... Awaiting further investigations inc X-ray tomorrow and clinical assessment by operating Surgeon.

BUT as stated stent completely passed within 24 hours - so no stent retained in place!!

ANY MED THOUGHTS OBSERVATIONS WELCOMED

Many thanks

Jayne

Hey Jane,

I'm also on Tramadol, and one of the side effects is nasty night sweats for some people (just like menopause), and do still talk to your doctors. It's made me feel more sluggish when this has happened. I don't know what kind of electrolytes to suggest other than the usual, but if you're still in the hospital, maybe they can do an IV for you. Hope this helps a little and take care ❤️ 💙 💜

Hi J,

Let me consider everything you've just said... but off the top of my head, the excessive sweating and fatigue make me think of vitamin B12 deficiency, not so much an electrolyte imbalance. But they should be monitoring your B12 routinely... so is your level normal or low? Need to get a couple of hours of shut-eye, but will get back to you tomorrow! And I did get your PM... please feel free to PM me anytime!

:O)

Hello Jayne.

Thanks for sharing your experiences of night sweating.
My wife and I have both had this problem, so console each other with the knowledge that we are not alone.
We have not looked into the possible causes except for the occasional comment on the obvious, such as outside temperature and menopausal symptoms.
I look forward to reading the replies to your post to be enlightened as to what might also cause this phenomenon.

Best wishes

After what you've had done, night sweats are more likely to be an infection or even from stress. Get well soon.

Good evening

Thank you for your kind replies ----

Just done second cross country round trip of the week and back home in the hills having had x-ray and seen surgeon - now awaiting CT scan.

In fact, everything has settled since my posting on here during Monday evening prior to going to bed [yesterday]!

Today: Excellent positive interim feedback is that no night sweat upon waking this morning refreshed and 'normal' [for me]

ie good night - perspiration free - and up for travelling to and from the city [again twice daily forays this week - and it's only Tuesday!]

.........................

Hoorah!!!!

Sorry I took to posting - perhaps a little prematurely - I just figured there might be a thought or two that I might take on board in readiness for my consultation today following this morning's x-ray [straight pics just for endorsement of residual stone now down to c. 10mm and other stuff].

Consultation went well - and I am now a little more informed and know the next steps.

Will be glad when this kidney is cleared ..... so that the main abdominal reparative second surgery can proceed and I may yet be put-back-together again after my TIES Journey! Humpty-Dumpty is back in business once again lol.

Intermediary Upshot:

Health balance restored now I have eased off the fluids and dropped the Tramadol

No infections no temperature just needing to rebalance it appears.

So I am a happy beanie and balance it would appear has been found - Clever body!!! [self body hug - just me being thankful].

Responses:

I will PM you W30Bob with update - hope you had good shut eye - and thanks for initial feedback - Bless you - appreciated.

Thank you too Rose Bud, Bill, Ben38, and as ever Morning Glory. Hug - Hug - Hug - Hug.

I will conclude for the present, by saying I am happy to be back in the hills and feeling good - albeit a little tired following the cross country hill motoring forays of today - Good thing I am happy behind the wheel - have motor and it was sunny today [amidst gloomy fog rain and colder temps here in UK]- and I am motivated!

Grateful thanks all round.

Take care xxxx

Best wishes

Jayne
