Hollister Appliance Failure - Pouches Separating at the Seam

Hello all, I know someone else posted about this same topic (30Bob?), but I think it's worth repeating. I just got a new batch of pouches a few weeks ago and started on my first box. I use the Hollister 8958 one-piece, with Velcro closure. The first one was fine, no issues. The second and third ones both developed a separation right at the tail of the pouch, where the last part of the opening is. Along the seam, it failed and a small hole developed. This happened on the second day with both pouches. I've managed to continue to wear them, but I need to clean the end way back from the opening, not easy to do, but better than having to trash them and start over. I've reported it to Hollister, and of course, they asked for the Lot number. I looked at all my new appliances (I ordered six boxes) and they are all the same Lot number, so I'm anticipating a bunch of defective pouches. I'm pretty pissed. They are sending me out some new ones, don't know how many. They said they will report this to their quality control department. We all need to make sure to report these kinds of problems because if we don't, things will probably get worse. Everyone wants to make money, but when it comes to ostomy supplies, quality control needs to be the top priority.

Gosh Terry, that's awful. Quality is getting worse for sure. I think the whole batch is bad and they need to replace all of them. This happened to me years ago with ConvaTec. They were replaced quickly. We all depend on good products.

I've had issues with a couple of boxes from Hollister. One batch would get pinholes on the end where I secured the Velcro, and the other had the separation issue you described. Very frustrating, indeed. I did call Hollister and they replaced them, as they should. I'm only a year into this colostomy life, but from what I've read here, the quality of the products is definitely declining.

Never had that issue with Hollister. I’ve had the filter leak a bit from putting a lot of pressure on it but that’s only happened maybe 3 times.

I've been using Hollister 2 piece for 2 years with no issues.  Had some really full bags... that hung in there.. thank goodness.

I also use Hollister 2 piece drainable and only once in 3 years did I get a small pin hole at the base. Other than that all OK. Regards IGGIE

And I might add:

My really full bags "hung in there" because they had an IGGIE clip securing the drain. 😉

G-Day BB,

I hope people are getting some use out of the IGGIE clip. It really does help to keep it safely closed as well as being able to shorten the bag if needed. Regards, IGGIE

No problem with Coloplast bags, however their Bravda no sting paste I did have to add a little bit of stoma powder or else it never hardens up and actually leaks out when I go vertical.

I have a colostomy, but used Hollister fresh out of the hospital because that is what they suggested and while I liked the bag, I had the same issue with the seam. It happened with every batch I got, so at first I just used the tape that goes over it, which can be purchased separately. Then I got tired of it and switched over to the convex brand that had the ring attached to the wafer, and I'm happy with it. It is also smaller (I'm a short woman of 5'2"). They offer the same products for ileostomy wearers as well. Hope this helps. They also have an adhesive tape that is rounded and precut to go over the adhesive on the wafer that is superior to Hollister.

Now with regards to charging the bags... Again, I have a colostomy bag, but I managed to find these little liners that you insert into the bag, and once used, you simply remove the bag as you would a garbage bag from the can and discard them. They are even flushable. They are a godsend because I was fanatical about changing my bag and not having a smell, which had me spending way too much time in the bathroom throughout the day... I hope something I've mentioned helps you out :)
