Hey everyone,

Does anybody wear bags without filters? I could do without this extra inch on top.

I accidentally ordered some without it from Hollister.  I prefer a filter now with Coloplast.  Hollister filters can be rendered useless within minutes if not paying attention to moving the 💩 away from the top.

If you use a 2 piece, cracking the pouch open is super easy with the Hollister.  Not so much with Coloplast but, is probably still easier than unraveling a 1 piece to deflate IMO.

Hi K,

I don't wear a filtered bag, but did try them when I first got my front-butt.  Never found them to work very well and never really needed one.

;O)

No filter on my one piece coloplast bag..they never worked for me...very easy for me to open my bag and let the gas out.

Usually, even if a bag has a filter, it morphs into a filterless one after the first output.

Not sure about the cost involved between the two. Some folks have peace of mind using them.

Consensus from members here says filters don't work. I agree. Been using them for 8 years.

Better off using the EZ vent.

I don’t use filtered bags because as Warrior said, they’re useless after any output.  I do use the EZ vent and it’s great!

I use a bag with a filter but it doesn't do me any good. It gets clogged within minutes and then is useless. I don't find that I need it that often. If there is going to be gas in the bag it is most likely to be at  night and I get up to empty my bag 2 to 3 times a night so I am letting the air out then. Where my ostomy is the filter gets pushed down so it is over my stoma, so it gets clogged really fast. I don't recommend Hollister bags with filters on a 2 piece system. They just don't work.

Hi,

I have the same problem - have you mentioned this to a STOMA nurse?

I get really bad 'ballooning' at night, dangerous as the bag can come off. I also have what they call 'large output' and was told to take IMMODIUM. Not sure if you have that in the USA - it's generally used for IBS and diarrhea and contains LOPERAMIDE HYDROCHLORIDE, which can only be taken short term for people who don't have a STOMA; it slows output down. I personally never take any type of medication unless it's absolutely necessary. I am still getting quite severe back and stomach pain from having an ILEOSTOMY 6 months ago - have been prescribed MORPHINE. I was told I could lead a normal life - bunch of jokers, for sure. Anyway, I do hope you get it all sorted soon.

Take care,

Mindy

Loperamide slows down digestion which is good for high output stomas. Unfortunately when you slow down digestion it gives gas time to build up. If you want help with gas also you need loperamide with simethicone — "Imodium Multi-Symptom Relief" contain both loperamide (the anti-diarrheal) and simethicone (the anti-gas medication).

Severe back and stomach pain 6 months after getting your ileostomy seems problematic. Is there a reason they gave you for such long-term pain?

Hi Kas,

I will be checking into these EZ vent bags! Never heard of them. Go figure.

I use a bag without filters; I tried filters once and I hated them, lol.

Hello Mindy,

I too experience the bag inflating at night while sleeping. Unfortunately, I have figured out that if I do not eat anything after 4 PM, it is mainly okay. However, this makes it very inconvenient to attend any events after that time that include eating. I tried Beano before bed and meals, but that does not work.

I don't use a filter. Tried them and I wasn't impressed.

Beano is not an all-purpose anti-gas medication — it works best with beans and  cruciferous vegetables. Taking it before bed doesn't do much since it's best if taken before a meal containing beans and/or cruciferous vegetables.
