Facing a Required End Colostomy: Seeking Advice and Experiences

Hi I am 42 years old I have a supra pubic catheter and have been told by my colorectal surgeon that I need a end colostomy for nerve damage to bladder and bowel. At the moment I have to manually evacuate my bowel which is horrendous a have three surgeries to repair pouches in the anterior and posteria vaginal wall. I have been told they can't repair it anymore and now need the colostomy. I have been told it is no different to having catheter. I need to ask and get some answers to questions regarding the surgery and life post surgery. I used to be a nurse so have some basic knowledge.  What is like immediately after surgery? How painful is it? How long r u in hospital? I will ask other questions as I get answers to my first questions to try and get info in a logical order thank u for reading my story

Hiya Yayamei, I read your post and it sounds like you are having the same problems I had, after years of having toilet problems, my fantastic New surgeon discovered I had a prolapsed bowel. I had an operation called a Rectocele ( I don't think that's the correct spelling!!) but like you had to manually evacuate my bowel and it is not pleasant at all. I won't go into the details of the op, google it!! But I was told it was the worse case he had ever seen. After my surgery I was uncomfortable but not in agony. For me solving one problem created another and I had to have an Ileostomy a year later as my bowel had became totally incontinent. I really hope you get sorted out, if I can answer anything else just ask.

hey too you both ....wow that evacuation sounds awful actually im interested how you manually did evacuate sorry i do like to know details because im truley interested in this whole deal i used to have to use an enema cause i was told i had severe scar tissue from severe crohns disease which actually affected my large bowel but had a few reversals done but went through 4 years of hell trying to go to the loo(toilet ) with the rectum pinhole in size so i for the first time had too make the choice of having another stoma formed and after wasting 4 years of my life i finally got the scar=tissue cut out ...I think the more unwell you are going into surgery it takes longer to get well after my 8th operation or say after my 4th op the times were all different it was wheather i was healthy enough or too unwell with the times i got out but i guess it took me 3 months to feel 90% better ..if u can eat well and try to be healthy IF you can maybe you wont be so ill for too long just my memories of ll my ops are different .Now i suffer sever abdominal pain (scar tissue) and cant think of a thing to help make it better .Awaiting my 9th op for large hernias for somtime now and want to be healthier (not really working) at the moment but Pain after surgery might or might not be as bad as you think maybe googling it mite help ..Dont want to scare you because we are all different I wont say it wasnt painful though some were hell some wernt as bad morphine pumps can be awesome  goodluck hun ..LOL i think i kind of  ranted in this take the good bits out sorry bout that goodluck all the best you mite fond out the pouchy is the best thing to eva happen xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx mooza .Aust.

Thank u for your replies. I also had posteria repairs after three vrepairs my consultant has said its too risky to do any more repairs. How long we're u in hospital when u had your operation? Yayamei
