I'm looking to get a continent diversion.  I was told by the urologists at Shands in Florida, that I'm too much of a risk because my kidneys only function at 45%.

Then who in THE COUNTRY would be the best sugeon to go to?  Where do I look to research this information?  What doctors are known to perform this surgury on a frequent basis?

Does anyone know where I could get contact information & profiles on tese "Urinary Continent Diversion Specialists"?

Thanks for any information any one can provide!

I don't know your medical history or what specific type of continent diversion you are looking for.

In general, the best place to look for a urologist who does a lot of continent urinary diversions would be a large academic medical center.  You should be able to pick up names of practicing urologists and specialists.  You could also look up oncology urologists, they would be doing more of these surgeries than anyone.

I don't know much about Florida.  Emory Universtiy /hospital (in Atlanta) is a large teaching facility, good reputation and maybe not too far for you.  You could google the staff, get a name and email them.

I am not sure of their specifice criteria.  Urinary tract infections are at high risk with some continent diversions and that may be your urologists concern.

I had mine done at the Mayo Clinic in Pheonix Arizona. They have a clinic in Florida also.

hey spiritual living:

I think Cleveland Clinic can help you. The website is www.clevelandclinic.org. This hospital has some of the best specialists and procedures in the world! I was there a couple of weeks ago for a consult regarding my periostomal hernia. I was very pleased with everything. I will be having surgery to fix the hernia (Hopefully in the next couple of months.) If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Good Luck!

I highly recommend the following academic medical centers:

1) Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina

2) University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC

3) Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC

I had my Urostomy surgery performed @ Duke University in 2005, but as a healthcare professional, I will tell you that any of the above listed faciities are consistiently listed among the best facilities in the world for Urology and Urologic reconstructive surgery. They are all academic medical centers. I recommend that you seek a practitioner that is board-certified in their speciality.

I believe almost everything should be done in a teaching/large medical facility these days after dealing with my diseases. I am going to say Cleveland Clinic or Mayo. I am going to CC next week to see the best pouch GI and hope to meet with a Urogynocologist as well.

Not sure where you are located the CC is worth the trip and they are the best.
