Well, I'm new to this site. I've had an ileostomy for nearly 12 months now. I'm used to it now and find it easy to do. But I need to build up my confidence again and start doing things I used to do, look for a job, and stay at friends' houses instead of making excuses that I can't. I'm frightened in case my bag leaks.

Well momof2girls, welcome to the site. I think I can speak for a lot of us when I say we've all been down that road and can empathize with you. I admit it took me a lot longer than that before I felt comfortable even around friends, and yes, I had blowouts at a homecoming party the first year. It felt like pulling the bag over my head, and it was hard to hide with a white shirt on, but after ten years, I can laugh at it all, except when I wake up with a blowout. But I have learned to use the washing machine and dryer. Things could be a lot worse, but I hope you look on the bright side. You know what I mean, and good luck in the future, and don't be shy about dropping us a line or two. And jokes are warmly accepted, Ed

I'm still uncomfortable when I go out for meals, drinks, bingo just in case it leaks. My friends have been supportive since I had it done; they asked me questions and didn't hold back on telling them. I find the blowouts uncomfortable as it pulls and burns. I had problems with my stoma last week; it was bleeding. My bag size was 32mm and now 25mm; that was causing the problem. My skin was inflamed and very red and sore to touch. I'm having to be careful with the clothes I wear so it doesn't show. My friend wants me to be her chief bridesmaid, and she is the one panicking about what dress to get me, and I'm calm. Would you believe I've nicknamed my stoma Fred? Haha, just changing it one day as it decided to start to go again and I went, "Pack it in, Fred!" Haha, my consultant and the nursing staff, plus my doctor, think it's funny, but I do have good days and bad. When I do go out, I ask my eldest daughter or friend if you can notice it. I don't like using public toilets either in case it smells; I use disabled ones as they are more private.
