In 2004 i had colostomy surgery due to ulcerative colitis and had some kind of fluid leaking from my rectum, they said this will go away in no longer than a year or two. well to this day i still have it coming out multiple times a day sometimes 10 times at the most. i have no control when it decides to come out, it looks like some type of infection, or something that would come out of a really bad zit. Keep in mind i have went to the doctor and asked them about this and they usually give me an xray and of course they say everything is fine or there is nothing there. ive even asked them to give me a sample cup so they can have it tested or to at least see that something is coming out. and i dont have a stoma nurse, never have actually. after surgery i was in hospital for about a month and then released basically learning everything on my own. just dont know why this stuff still comes out of me. my diet is fine and all that. so i dont know. keep in mind i dont have any type of insurance, because i cant afford it, really i cant period. and i cant get medicaid or medicare, because im between the ages of 19 and 60 and im not disabled. If i need to explain anything better feel free to ask

hey, Whats up? I have had the same thing happen to me. I have had my colostomy since 08" because I had incontinence and diverticulitis. Since my surgery I have had seapage none stop. I could not control it. My spincster muscle was really weak. first the discharge was about 2 times a day then it became every minute of the day all day long! It drove me freaking nuts. After about a year and a half of this I contacted my surgeon about this problem. I had to be near a bathroom 24 hours a day. I couldn't go anywhere and also because I was embarrased to be in public with this. In july I had my rectum removed to eliminate this problem. If noone will do anything to help you I would find a doctor that can help you in correcting this problem. I wouldn't quit trying until I found one. I know that constant discharge can be a nusance and I wish you the best in luck in correcting this problem. Take care.... Chris

Hi, I too have the same. I have an ileostomy. When I queried it, I was told that it is the mucous produced by the bowel that provides lubrication for what would normally be in there. I was told it is quite normal and it made sense to me, but does create urgent problems at times! Rachel

Hi, I have a colostomy due to Diverticulitus & I now have ulcerative colitus in my rectum with a lot of horid discharge, I use glycerine soppositories to help clear it out & if it looks infectected ,I use an antibiotic suppositories  for a couple of days, so far, although its a pest, it does help reduce the mess! Good luck !.

Hey there,

Curious to see what your second opinion was. I have an ileostomy do to a long life of Crohn's. I was having the same issue at first, and since I was so excited to leave the house without having to worry about the nearest bathroom, it sent my spirt for a loop. It stopped for over 2 yrs, but is back now, and like others my Dr is wants to remove whats left. I'm putting it off though, single working mom, I don't really want to stop for yet another surgery. Anyways if you came across another option I'd love to hear it, or just let us know how it went.

Peace

Hi All

I have a problem with mucus discharge too, but it don't happen very often, I use stick on panty pads which I find a great help, you can change them as little or as often as required.

If and when it do happen, I tend to get a pain in the rectum, so I sit on the loo until the discharge finishes.

Hope this helps

Take Care

I actually FEEL as if I am going to have a bowel movement and the sometimes it goes away when I sit on the potty (like phantom limb pain??) and other timeas, I will actually have a movement that is weird and mucousy. Is that normal?

It is normal don't worry.  The mucous is normal if it starts to smell bad get in touch with Doctor (not urgent). I was always told the best thing to do was sit on the toilet, it is called phantom pain.  Phantom pain comes and goes, it can be very painfull sometimes.
