Hi All,

It's now almost a year since my stoma operation (and four months since chemo) but over the last couple of weeks I've been getting a fairly clear discharge from the rectum. There's no great quantity but its enough to wet my underpants - is this normal?

Regards,

Hi, I too have the same. I have an ileostomy. When I queried it, I was told that it is the mucous produced by the bowel that provides lubrication for what would normally be in there. I was told it is quite normal and it made sense to me, but does create urgent problems at times!

Also have a look at the post entitled 'drainage', this is the link -

there are quite a lot of posts about it there.

Thanks Lottagelady - that puts my mind at rest. I must admit I was panicking a bit since I've been of chemo since August and my mind started working overtime thinking things were getting worse. I'll read the section you mention,

Thanks again,

Hi,

When I first had a discharge from the rectum it worried me sick as I thought something had gone rong with the sugery.

My stoma nurse reaaured me it it a natural re-action for the rectum, it is because the part that has been left behind still thinks it i attached, and hence the discharge, nothing to worry about.

This will continue at regular intervals, not a problem.

Hope this helps you.

Take Care

Hugs
