Got my colostomy on left side after pelvic floor prolapse and failed repairs causing inability to stool. Also have issues with colonic motility, celiac artery compression, UC, SIBO, and extensively stretchy connective tissue. The colostomy has been a blessing and a nightmare. Maybe the stoma is too close to my stomach but it makes me throw up when it empties and without warning. It has been extremely painful but is improving. I've lost 30+ lbs since surgery 4/26/18 and have been vomiting and having straight liquid output for three weeks making eating, hydration, and any normalcy of life impossible but my surgeon just acts like it's normal.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

A convex ostomy skin barrier can help prevent output leakage and skin issues. Unfortunately, some misconceptions about convexity may keep people with ostomies from using it.
