Blisters on Stoma - Seeking Answers for Unexplained Friction

My ileostomy surgery was last April after 20 years with a J Pouch. In July, I noticed a blister forming on my stoma....thinking the worst, I took pictures and sent them to my gastroenterologist and surgeon.

I thought it was cancer or the Crohn's disease creating some growth on my stoma. I went to the doctor who took a biopsy...the result came back negative for cancer or Crohn's. Thank God. The doctor said it was a blister created by friction. A few weeks went by and more blisters developed. So back to the doctor I go. My surgeon insisted it's caused by friction. I'm not doing anything physical to create such a problem, and my stoma is above my pants and belt. I truly believe this is not something caused by friction.

Does anybody have any clues? I don't know what to do next. If it is caused by friction, how do I solve this? If not, where do I go to get some answers?

Desperately seeking a solution.

Hey, so the closest thing I've had to what you described as a blister looked to me more like a canker sore in your mouth, or a small ulcer.

It was always quite small, maybe 2mm x 2mm, and always in the same spot.

For me it was kinda friction in a way. Took me a while to determine it was caused by placing the edge of the hole in the pouch too close to my stoma- and it would essentially cut into the stoma slightly, resulting in what appeared as these small ulcers. Next pouch I'd cut larger and ensure it didn't sit there, and problem solved, it would go away.

Similar small abrasions have appeared over the years and if ever anywhere other than that spot I just described, I could always trace it back to some kinda rough housing or "trauma".

Never really performed any kinda intervention to make it go away, it would always just heal on its own and eventually I figured it out.

Hope that helps?

I have not had any blisters actually on my stoma but had several in the incision where they took out muscle in my chest to reconstruct the rectum. The doctor did not seem concerned and just popped them. Said they were just from the pressure of the sutures. They were huge bubbles. I have not had any since a couple of weeks post-surgery.

Your description of the blisters is perfect...looks like a fever sore on your lip. The problem is that they are not around the hole in the appliance, the blisters are up higher and closer to the stoma opening. They don't hurt but I'm worried about them.

I haven't experienced blisters as you describe them, but I had a lot of irritation to my skin. It turns out I was having an allergic reaction to the product I was using. I switched products, and that solved the problem. Maybe something to consider?

My surgeon just advised me to use Mylanta around the stoma, thin layer. It may have to do with acidic foods you are eating. Can give it a try. I think little white areas are common.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Mylanta. I'll give it a try and let you know. I think that could be the cause because if I ever get any leakage under the appliance...my skin gets irritated very quickly and left untreated it turns into a bad rash.
