I have had severe abdominal pain right around my stoma and diarrhea for 5 weeks now. Went to GI was sent to ER because he thought I had a blockage. They did CT and shows nothing. Back to GI and they did endoscopy. Nothing but really red and inflamation. Then I started having yellow mucas discharge from stoma followed by watery diarrhea and swollen stoma. Saw surgeon, he said that was normal. I am still having the same problems. Have only been eating dry toast and drinking fluids. Yesterday had same problem severe pain followed by diarrhea and it is still going on. Has anyone else had this. I have only had my colostomy for 6 months and still have not gotten the proper help on what to eat. Surgeon says no restrictions. Ostomy nurse said no raw veggies, salads, nuts, beans, fruits with seeds or skin. I tried eating beans and they came out whole. My vitamin levels are low due to vitamin being in bag. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you

well i`m not a doctor, so bear that in mind. i eat a high protien low fiber diet with my colostomy and it works well for me. eat several small meals instead of the normal 3, remember sometimes having something in your stomach is better than it being empty. you will learn with time what foods to avoid. most people new to ostomies cant get it in their heads that you do not need the normal amount of fiber in your diet....good luck

The best advise as everyone one here says is CHEW, CHEW, CHEW! I took Have full beans in the bag so I too need to follow that advise! Bananas also thicken stool but produce gas. Keep that fiber down as mmsh says! So used to eating salads and they are the enemy these days but if I have stool, I prefer it to be more liquid just because it cleans up easier and never pancakes! Hope things get better for you!
