Hi Guys and Gals

Is there anyone from Canada here who can help out with a problem MIYZY is having?

Not knowing how your healthcare system works over there, I am not sure I can be of much help.... but it seems that she has been left to cope on her own for the last 20 years without any specialist help... that is awful!

What are the specialist stoma nurses called in Canada, and how would she go about finding one?

Can anyone assist????

Hi there,

I think I've seen a similar question before in the forum. If you go to the main site (not the forum) you will see a link called "Find an ET nurse".  You will find it on the left side, where the other links are.

Aside from that, the website for the Canadian Ostomy nurses is: http://www.caet.ca/

Hi Rachel,

From my experience, the specialist nurses (referred to as ET Nurses)are available through local hospitals or the county CCAC (Ontario)  My ET Nurse was provided through theCCAC but I did have difficulty at the local hospital obtaining suchservices.

I don't know a lot about New Brunswick, but I'd start here:

Department of Health and Community Services — Extra Mural Program (Home Health Care)

      (506) 658-2734

Hope that helps!

Lorraine

Hi all: Rachel I doubt if I can help much after all the crap I went through, and I live just south of Miyzy, but this might work in New Brunswick. I would go to the local hospital and ask how to get in touch with the stoma nurse, then I would have to explain what a stoma nurse was and they would send me to the floor where you would be put on a list for her next visit. When I seen the list I knew it would be a couple of months, turns out I never got a call back. After doing this two or three times I said the hell with it and get my information here.

But I think Miyzy should give it a try, sometimes you never know. Good luck .

Have you looked at www.c3life.com (another ostomy forum) if you click on Ask the clinican panel you can leave a message and a ostomy nurse near to you will email you back. They aim to contact you within 72 hours. It's private so you can go into detail the problems you are having. They might be a able to put you in contact with a local ostomy nurse.

Also STOMA INOVATIONS.  Is a new site only been around for 1 year there are quite a few people from Canada on there, someone might know an ostomy nurse near you.

Also the local United Ostomy Association of Canada.   Check their website  http://ostomycanada.ca/home  for local chapters.  They will have a ET nurse as part of the support.  My local chapter has the ET nurse that visited me in hospital and at home as support staff.    Maybe even call your local hospital to see if they have a ET nurse on staff and see if can get some support that way.   Good luck.

hi there,.. Ostomy nurses are referred to as E.T. nurses here and you should be able to get in touch with one by either calling or visiting the hospital nearest you,.. i'm not sure what exactly the problem is that MIYZI is having but, if she is a canadian citizen, born or naturalized, any problems she's having WILL be taken care of. If she's anywhere near a hospital, all she has to do is go in to Emergency,.. she might have a bit of a wait, but they WILL see her. Hope this helps. If she needs any more information feel free to ask and i'll find out what i can

... E.T. nurse stands for Enterostomal Therapist nurse... most, if not all hospitals will have at least one....it doesn't make sense to me that she'd be "left to cope on her own"...health care in Canada is universal,.. NO ONE is refused treatment

Can I ask where Miyzy lives (prov., largest city nearby)?

As others have said, the hospital emerg is often the best starting place to 'see' an ET Nurse.

But I'm also wondering if her GP could not find one for her ... or her GI doc. They must have this info available to them.

Also, some of the bigger surgical/ostomy suppliers have an ET on staff certain days of the month. Depends on where the supplier has their base(s).

Sometimes it may feel like you're left on your own here (Canada), but treatment and care is available.

Maybe ask the ET nurse here if she has any contacts where Miyzy lives?

Hope she gets the help she's looking for.
