I also live alone but I keep busy by playing bridge with some wonderful friends.

I have had a colostomy for a year and a half. I am now going in to have a morphine pump implanted in my back for three herniated disc.

I keep busy and live in a condo. which I own and love. I don't have any pets at this time but I love all of them.

Hi Susieq,

Has your doctor discussed how the morphine will affect your colonic motility?

Here's a link that discusses morphine, and if you scroll down to the section on "Constipation", you will find information on morphine and colonic motitility:

This topic brings to mind a question I have been pondering regarding the analgesic pumps, namely, does the pump work on other pain medications like Dilaudid? For instance, I find it does not have the side effects of morphine. I have been living with a herniated disc for the last 20 years, but two years ago something more sinister happened. Where an exacerbation from the disc would last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, what I have now is horrible pain in my whole left leg, and this is every day. I don't want another spinal operation; the last two operations have kept me away from the specialists for as long as I can possibly avoid it. The only time I have read about these pumps, it was with morphine, and after four surgeries ending with an ileostomy, it was always morphine. The hallucinations were frightening and seemed so real, like I knew some of the nurses were trying to kill me. This was so real I still remember it after seven years, and it seems like yesterday. However, others I have talked to had no such problems, which comes right back to how we all react differently to differing medications. Does anybody have an answer? Thanks for reading my babble, Ed.

Ed I would take the  Dilaudid pump anyday over Morphine, but they usually just give that temporary, Morphine Pumps are long term as like what Hospice uses.  Both Drugs Highly addictive, but I like the way Dilaudid makes you feel short term.  Anyway I cant get into this pump on here, it is up to you all and you alls Doctors.  I wish you both the best with the pumps, All I can do is say a Prayer, God Bless You all and keep you safe, Jenny

Ed, there is a good chance you can get a Dilaudid Pump with that kind of pain.  They control the amount you get at one time it is pre-measured now days.  If you feel you can't take the pain without help then ask your Doctor about the Dilaudid pump, I know the Morphine pump is put inside the skin, the Dilaudid Pump dont have to be.  So you can not overdose on it.  I am not big into Morphine, for one, I am allergic to it, for two it is what Hospise gives you to also die on and keep you from so much pain when your ready to hit the dust,  like if you have Pancreatic Cancer or Liver Cancer etc.  When life gets you down, Just sing this song in your Head:

Mama Said There Will Be Days Like This, Days like this my Mama Said.  That should do the trick.  If that song dont work then sing L is for the way you look at me and O is for the only one I see and V is very very Extraordanary, E is even more than anyone that I adore and Love is all that I can give to you, Love is more than just a game for two, Two in Love can make it, Baby please dont take my heart and break it, Love was made for you and me.  Ed Music lives in me and I live in the music, it helps keep my mind off the time, I am waiting it out as I was taught, but I am so close and so nervous, Talk Later Ed, Hope the songs Help, Your Good Friend, Jenny
