Hello, I'm new to this site so still finding my way, that is if my memory...what's that! will allow me to remember where I've been before. However despite all that I have a question regarding quite a large parastomal hernia. I acquired this Ileostomy as a surprise after an operation on my spine. I was told I developed a blockage which caused a rupture of the colon. I did have a good stoma nurse available where I was living when I had the operation but have since moved house and the support I have discovered is nil in this area. My hernia is so big that it is now causing me problems find a pouch that will fit and seal.I already use additional seals and I also use a hernia belt, but it only helps so much.

My question is does anyone know of anything better to stop the hernia getting any bigger. I was told that a repair may be dangerous for me as the Dr's where cautious about the aenasthetic.

In general, the hernias get larger over time.  The best thing  you can do for now is use a hernia support belt whenever possible.  Avoid activity that causes abdominal strain if possible.

I'm not sure if  your ileostomy is reversable, or if you would be a good candidate for that or a hernia repair.  I think getting 2  physician opinions is always wise, and from a colorectal specialist.  There are physicians that specialize in hernia repair itself.  You should have your physician check your hernia from time to time regarldess; especially if pain or symptoms of blockage.

Pouches:  I would recommend any company that has something soft and flexible; the opening should be at least 1/8-1/4"larger than your stoma measurement.  The stomas do seem to stretch width wise more when the hernia is exerting pressure (such as sitting/standing rather than reclining).   You may also need to "picture frame" around the pouch borders to reinforce the seal. I would also take care to carefully remove the pouch with adhesive remover.  The skin often thins around the stoma when hernias are large.

If doing all these things already and not working, then You may want to check for an ostomy RN in the city nearest to you.   Another source:  www.uoaa.org   I i am assuming you are in the US...but maybe not???)  You can find the link to a city close to you.  You may be able to find an ostomy Rn through a group close to you.

Not sure if this helps, but would like to know how it goes.

I had a Hernia removed almost 2 years ago to the day.. and after i got out of the hospital almost immediately I got another one now i don't lift anything..  I wish i had a solution for you.. but maybe someone else will have one... and i will also benefit from the answer... It's hard not to lift stuff... even shopping for food is impossible!! Good luck!
