After my ileostomy at age 86, the part of my rectum remaining got ulcerative proctitis. Right now I am hospitalized with nonstop bleeding from the remaining rectum. My ostomy is not affected. Does anybody else have this problem?

G-Day bbobh60,

I had a J-Pouch for 18 years and was left with a very small amount of the colon attached to the J-Pouch after having all the rest of the colon removed, but that last little bit got pouchitis and used to cause a lot of problems. So after 18 years, I had the J-Pouch removed and my butt stitched up and an ileostomy formed. Best decision I ever made.

bbobh60, if your ileostomy is going to be permanent, get your rectum removed and your butt stitched up.

I love my stoma. Regards, IGGIE

Yes, I had ulcerative proctitis after I had an ileostomy and colectomy. I was too sick to take my rectum out at the same time. I found a combination of cortisone and mesalamine suppositories to be effective but costly. However, depending upon when your ileostomy was done, there is also disuse proctitis which is treated differently. My ulcerative proctitis was cured in January this year - my rectum was removed!
