I have read previously about odor control products typically found in your home. But have forgotten what they were. Please advise again.

What type of ostomy are you anticipating? Ileostomy or colostomy? Odor issues are much less with an ileostomy. Especially as one adjusts one's diet. What Alex said is good. You should know that those things are added to the bag itself. I have an ileostomy and no longer use any in-bag deodorants. I simply limit smelly things in my diet. Like raw onions or fish. I also take 60mg of chlorophyll every day. There have been studies that say chlorophyll actually does not help with odor. Yet, I persist. :-)

You may also find that you, yourself, are ultra-sensitive to odors in the first few months. These are usually phantom odors. People can no more smell anything from your bag than they can from another's bum. Assuming good hygiene, of course. :-)

Phantom odor is a thing. The first few days after my operation I drove my wife and all the nurses crazy, with the.. hey do I smell? Can you smell that? Questions.. lol..

Now it's less, but I'm telling you I can smell it, I do.. one reason why I prefer a 2 piece appliance so I can clean and/or replace the bag.

I have an ileostomy, so strong odors are much less a problem than a colostomy. But, I would posit that, as long as you are properly empty your bag and clean the tail, you could still be experiencing phantom odors. They can still get trapped in your nasal passages. I had that happen as far back as when I lived in a Michigan basement almost 60 years ago. I would wager that they will eventually disappear. But then, you and I live in entirely different climates. :-)

It is a thing..u got that right. And to us its relevant.

I think somewhere in our noses we have a memory file that runs a mock.. a transfer smell perhaps?  Something triggers it, and just us..we smell on cause its inside our nose.. hiding out. Ha ha.  Maybe running some scents through our noses will rid us of that recurring odor. ..

So damn embarrassing.

Think pig pen from peanuts- Charlie Brown... epic.

An inexpensive odor Eliminator is adding 10 - 20 ml of hydrogen peroxide to your pouch.

Ostomy odor is created by bacteria breaking down certain foods, turning it into odorous waste and also sometimes creating odorous gases. This gas, like the stool, also makes it way into a pouch, filling it with air that must be released to prevent pressure from developing a leak, or worse, a pouch blowout.  Stool or fecal material  that is contained in an appliance for  several hours builds up bacteria and may  be more offensive when emptying.

Hydrogen peroxide has limited antibacterial effects. While hydrogen peroxide isn't always effective as antibacterial agent, it is a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it inhibits reproduction of bacteria. When injected into water, hydrogen peroxide releases a large amount of dissolved oxygen which has a strong oxidizing effect, destroying odors. This means hydrogen peroxide is more effective with liquid or semi-liquid output.
