Use all my senses

I've been studying "senses" through various fields/subjects; linguistic, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy so far. I've done these studies and researches objectively.

But now, I myself have fully used all my senses since being an ostomate: watching my stoma, hearing its sounds, smell from my stoma bag, caring for food, feeling skin around stoma under a stoma bag, etc... Added, I go for a walk to feel the change of seasons, go to museums and libraries, go shopping, care more about fashion, etc., to make my stoma life enjoyable and comfortable.

There are lots of awareness which makes my eyes wide open, and which I've never got if I didn't have ostomy. In that sense, I enjoy using all my senses and feeling that I'm certainly living!

p.s. Hope my poor English makes sense...

Getting an ostomy has allowed many people to return to a normal life. Being sick and stuck in a hospital gives you a greater appreciation of the freedom we have when we are healthy. When I go for leisurely walks to the beach, I slow down and explore flowers, spider webs, trees, birds, and the occasional bee. A hidden world most people miss because they're in a hurry and don't appreciate the little things.

Yes, and we certainly limit these senses when we're in the throes of pain and suffering; there's just no room for any of that.  I will add that I also engage in things that, prior to my ostomy, scared me, like flying. I figure I've been through ulcerative colitis, through the pain, the accidents, the tests, the hospitalizations and the ostomy surgeries themselves - if I can get through all of that, I can get on a plane!

Good for you, BebeJ.  You've crossed back into enjoying life when you realize that your ostomy is just a natural part of your body and doesn't have to be a daily torment.  And your English is fine.   HenryM

Bebe, I've already flown several times - my younger son was in Chicago for three years and I'm in New York....I also have friends in California and Florida and my husband and I have flown to see them. Nothing is holding me down now (although I will not skydive or bungee jump!)

BebeJ, your English is beautiful as are the thoughts you shared. Thank you. I am also finding a greater enjoyment of life now that I'm on the other side of cancer.

Hello, HenryM. It's amazing that I have a reply from whom has own page on "Collection" of this site!!

I'm so impressed with your words "ostomy is just a natural part of your body." That's exactly what I'm feeling now.

Actually, it takes time for me to accept the change of my body, that means being an ostomate. I may still persuade myself to accept that by saying something positive about ostomy. Well, I can have a reversal surgery if I wish. Don't know which way of life I will finally choose. Will see...

At least I hope I can fully accept my status now, and live naturally.

Hello, SusanT.

I found that you have your surgery just one month before I had!!

Have you already got used to living with ostomy bag?

I am still getting used to my bags. I was helped by having great ostomy nurses while I was in the hospital and another ostomy nurse who visited my home for a time after I left the hospital.

I am grateful to have had such good support since many here did not get as much.

Since we became ostomates so close in time, we are on this journey together ❤️
