I need help finding a doctor who does colonoscopy through the stoma. If anyone has heard about this procedure, let me know. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Just call your doctor and they’ll know who to send you to.

Any colorectal surgeon should be able to do this. Mine talks about it like it's routine.  I need to have these done as part of the surveillance to check that my cancer hasn't returned.  I live in Michigan so I don't have a name for you.

Any medical professional who specialises in this field should be able to do this for you.

It is the same procedure, only going through the front instead of the rear. 😉

You will probably get told you have the gown on backwards. 😊

Hi Susan, I have been calling a lot of doctors, and I am really getting frustrated. I know they are out there, but no luck so far. Thanks for getting back to me.

That's surprising that your gastroenterologist can't do this — my surgeon had told me it shouldn't be a problem. My biggest concern has been overflowing my bag during the colon clean. 🙄

I've had 2 done by the regular folks that do the routine colonoscopes.  Last one was last month and only issue I needed to reiterate was that I needed them to keep my pouch and not discard it.  Especially since I forgot to bring an extra just in case.  I didn't have any issues with discharge or overflow.  You should be well cleaned out for the procedure anyway.

Why are you making these calls? That does not sound right.

The surgeon or your G.I. should be making referrals or recommendations if they don't do the procedure.

Did you dump them?

Hi Frannie, the procedure is called an ileoscopy. I had one done about ten months ago by my gastroenterologist and he’s familiar with stomas. Do you have a gastroenterologist?

Any gastroenterologist does it. Not to worry. It is painless. The preparation is worse than the procedure. Best wishes.

The bag you use is a mile long...lol. Honestly, it's like 4 ft long. It's also drainable and comes in either one or two pieces.

I had mine done at Mayo clinic in Jacksonville FL. It was even prolapsed at the time 😵‍💫 a sprinkle of sugar on the thing and a little time and the procedure proceeded.

It didn't work for me.

I've had two colonoscopies within the past few years by two different doctors; they both scoped through the stomach as well. It was a routine procedure to do it that way.

I gotta have this done. I'm not amused one bit about sticking an imaging tube down my colostomy. What about the rectal stump? Does that get violated too? Yikes.
