Protruding Area Under Stoma Bag: Is This Normal?

Hi y'all. My surgery last November was completely unexpected due to diverticulitis. My issue is the area around my stoma, under the adhesive, is protruding. It seems to be growing, sticking out nearly 2.5 inches now. Earlier, this area was more flush with my stomach and much more discreet. There is no skin irritation, redness, etc. I clear the bag regularly.

Is this a common issue? I'm only 3 months into this new life. Thanks.

That sounds like it might be a hernia... technically called a parastomal hernia. It will look like a ball might be under your skin.

Get a hernia support belt pronto. Then get your surgeon or ostomy nurse to look at it to be sure that's all it is. Likely, your doctor will not want to fix it. Generally, it's not recommended unless it is causing problems. And these hernias tend to recur.

Hi there

My stoma sits on sort of a mound at the stoma site. I don't have a hernia; it's just the result of no abdominal wall support at the site. How do I know? I had a reversal, the site closed, and the mound was gone. Reversal failed, back to stoma, and the mound returns. As always, run any concerns by the professionals.

I agree with everyone else; sounds like a parastomal hernia. If it doesn't interfere with your pouching, don't worry about it. If it does make pouching difficult, talk to your doctor right away. If not, you can wait till your next appointment and mention it then. You may have to get a CT scan to see how big the hernia is and where exactly it is located. I know you already know where it is located, but your doctor may want more confirmation about it.

Many thanks to all. I did have a C scan today, and the hernia was confirmed. I wish I had known about support belts; it may not have become such an issue. I agree, the doc probably won't want to address it. I'll start asking here more often. Maybe later I can provide answers too.

I'm having mine repaired along with three incisional hernias on May 15. I would be really interested in knowing how yours goes. I am nervous about mine.
