Hello -

Our group is trying to gather some information re the yearly cost of supplies. Round numbers are fine (e. g. $800.00, $1,00.00, $1,200.00, etc) and please include only the basic supplies. The purpose of this info gather is to set a bench mark so a realistic figure can be presented to the various Pronincial Governments. Everything is confidential...thanks for your help.

Will be difficult to get info here, as well,  is by hit or miss to find Canadians on here....I am in Quebec now and the govt gives $700..which of course is not enough to cover all costs....my cost is around $1200..a year........ ..and insurance pays 80% for the difference......and some get full coverage who cannot afford it.........at all........

Each province is different how they handle ostomy..some give nothing.............I find it strange how the Canadian health system is very different for each province..................I know in Ontario you are trying to raise the amount ..from $600 and also get coverage for temporary ostomy also........

Good luck....you will have to humble  the Govt to do so........as I know some Govts pay for procedures which I consider cosmetic..and having a stoma is not cosmetic for sure..........is mind boggling at times........he who makes the loudest noise may get results.......

Supply costs depend entirely on whether I'm having skin problems or other complications, but I would estimate that pouch/wafer costs alone (assuming I change every 3 days) is around $1800 / yr.  Adding in barrier rings, pouch deodorant, gelling products, etc. can easily bring that up to $3000+.

That's assuming you change every 3 days - if you've got a problem stoma and are changing your appliance every day, I can imagine that it could easily go past $5000 a yr.

I get a government grant paid twice a year in total comes to about $975.00 ....the issue becomes Ive been told that I have to show that I spent that money on ostomy supplies before I even begin to claim anything ostomy related on my income tax returns...fortunately I get the Disability Tax Credit also....for my own personal money with pouches and flanges and tapes and skin barrier sprays I am likley around $1800 a year.

Hi Bryce!

I live in Virginia, but I was raised in New England.

I have very good insurance (BC/BS).

After being in FMLA, I still have to pay out of pocket to continue it while I'm not working. Yet, I pay my deductible.

Generally speaking, I pay about 1K a year.

Hi Bryce,

Clearly, I am not Canadian. However, interesting question - I guess some of the MedTech companies could readily answer your question not only in terms of cost and actual consumables used but also in relation to working towards getting their products accepted as prescribable items [reimbursement].... You may find CEOs are able to respond very accurately to your question - if they wish to - and also independently of compromise in respect of their own product development.

[I also appreciate you may know this and the research is into actual value or type of consumables used by a specific market].

Own background overlaps in marketing/development involvement of related product some years ago... and Ileostomist over time... also, more recently, was 1st UK implantee/explantee of TIES device.

Season's Greetings

Hi Bryce, I'm in NB. We get nothing here. My costs were normally about $1200-$1500, but for the past 12 months, it has run around $5000 due to severe skin issues. My medical insurance that I pay $350 a month covers a total of $2500 for all my drugs including ostomy supplies.
