Hello to all of you lovely people!

It's great to meet you all. This is my first forum post, so what better way to kick it off than with an interesting question.

When I had my ileostomy surgery, I found a great way of dealing with it post operation was to give it a name. Mine is called Bilbo which was named by my family. What I'd like to know is...

Do you have a name for your stoma? And if so what is it?

Hello YoungOstomate.

As you say, it's an interesting question you pose and one which has been posed before. I cannot recall what my reponse was then so I will give it a fresh try.   I call my stoma - STOMA -  in the same way I would 'call a spade a spade'. I have always been quite comfortable talking about it to those who are interested and educating them into what is involved at  practical, psychological and emotional levels. I do try to keep the conversations lighthearted and even funny at times, which makes me think that it might make a good routine for stand-up comedy. In fact, even some of  the names people have chosen in the past have made me smile, so perhaps that could be part of the routine as well.

I love the concept of Bilbo (Baggins) which would undoubtedly be amusing enough to bring a smile to an audience's faces if ever I decided to hit the road with it.

Best wishes

Bill

I have never named my penis and do not plan on naming my stoma.

LOL

I never named my stoma either, but if I were to give it a name, it would be something along the lines of "That slimy rosebud-looking thing that shits a lot."

Hi thanks for the reply Bill,

Ultimately, I call it my stoma but my little niece seems to like calling it by a name. It just clears the air a bit when it comes to a young audience. I do enjoy the name as it does bring out a smile or a chuckle from people.

Take care

James

My stoma is General Colin Bowel, and the appliance is Collette my French baguette.  Might as well have fun with it!

Hi there YoungOstomate ... My stoma's name is Sheldon, after Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. As I refer to him many times, "Sheldon (the super smart stoma) ... and believe me, my surgeon did create a super smart one because it gives me absolutely no issues, is easy to care for, and I only have to change its clothes once a week. And like you, it is just something to enable us (meaning me) to take things less seriously. I learned that before my surgery on the Inspire website, and pretty much everyone there had named their stomas. It is a personal preference, needless to say, but as a person on Inspire used to always say, "Your bag does not define you" and "better a bag than a box." LOL

Hi Young Ostomate

When I was in hospital after my surgery, my WOCN told me to name my stoma. I happened to be channel surfing and came across the reality show Real Housewives of New Jersey (or something like that) which starred a woman who was just so full of sh**t that I named my stoma "Snooki".

I named Rosie almost 4 years ago. She's after all a permanent member of my family. Much better, I think, than "the thing." My 7-year-old granddaughter knows all about her and refers to her by name whenever the occasion arises. This whole journey is such a personal thing, and therefore, I feel everyone should do what feels right for them, be it a name or discussing your new normal with others.

Mine's called Hettie; it just came to me, no idea why!

Never given me any issues, worked immediately, so I'm very lucky, and I agree with an earlier post, better a bag than a box. Nowadays, there's a much better choice of bags. I'm only 4 months post-op, but I'm now ready to trial others. The only advice I'd give is to join a local support group. I'm not into groups as a rule, but it does help to talk to fellow ostomates!

I call mine "Winnie" - as in "Winnie the Pooh". It amuses me. I liked the previous posters "Bilbo" (Baggins, from Bag End of course) and "Colin Bowel" too.

Yes, her name is New Maxine because she was revised in February due to a severe stricture and adhesions. I named her after Maxine Waters, a flaky senator from California. Every time I watch that wrinkled-up old bag full of crap on TV, I am assured that I picked out the right name!
