You have a great attitude towards having and living with an ostomy!

I too put on weight, about an extra 30 lbs. I was at 135 lbs. So this is my second week with Weight Watchers. I wasn't sure if I could do this plan because of all the fruits and vegetables you have to eat. After being on the diet for 4 days, I almost decided not to do it. I was having watery stools and didn't like the way I felt. Then I thought to myself, I can't give up. I want to lose about 25 to 30 lbs. So I put more carbs back into my diet and stayed within my point range. So far it seems to be working out. I have lost 3.8 lbs my first week and then I go again this Wednesday. My scale broke so I have to rely on the Weight Watchers scale until I go out and buy a new one. As it turns out, I got 4 invitations to go out for lunch and dinner over the next 4 weeks. This just comes at a bad time, not wanting to spoil my diet. So I guess I will be eating a lot of salads the next two days. In the afternoon, I try to have two fruits such as an apple, banana, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, or blueberries. WW wants you to have a serving of 5 fruits a day, but I cannot do that. It will be interesting to find out by adding more carbs if I am able to continue to lose weight.

Good luck, Pinklady31!

Do you have a colostomy or ileostomy? Just wondering... as I (ileo Dec 09) can't eat that much fruit/veg -- and some of those you mentioned mean 'instant blockage' for me.

All the best for continued healthy eating

Wow, great question and interesting to see the answers. My reply is YES! I expected to gain some of the 30 pounds I lost the year before my surgery—pure starvation and illness. I did not expect to put that on within months plus another 15! I'm grateful to be healthy, but the weight is really frustrating.

Several of you touched on what I think is a biggy—how veggies, fruits, and fiber are harder now. I've always battled my weight. When I was eating healthy, I would have huge salads or a protein with huge portions of veg to somewhat control my weight. Now, I can do much smaller amounts, and we all know the "price" we pay for lots of it. Not filling up on greens makes me more hungry.

By the way, I'm also a 55-year-old woman, so that isn't doing me any favors in itself with the slowdown of metabolism. I know what I have to do—eat less and move more! I definitely am curious if getting an ileostomy DOES do something to slow down metabolism. If food having a shorter route somehow changes that.
